EC B.E.S.T. Teacher

About the Role

The Exceptional Children (EC) General Curriculum Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities to ensure access to and progress within the general education curriculum. This role involves developing and implementing data-driven Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), delivering differentiated instruction, and collaborating closely with general educators, families, and support staff to meet each student's unique learning needs. The EC Teacher also manages classroom and behavioral supports, maintains accurate documentation, and actively participates in school and district initiatives to promote inclusive, student-centered learning environments.

Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning for students with disabilities following the general education curriculum.
• Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessments in accordance with established procedures.
• Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
• Develop data-based Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and other required special education paperwork.
• Schedule, lead, and/or participate in parent conferences/IEP meetings as appropriate.
• Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction and complete special education documents (e.g., IEPs).
• Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and implementing individualized behavior plans.
• Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
• Provide appropriate feedback on work to parents and students.
• Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
• Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations.
• Prepare required reports on students and activities.
• Participate in department, school, district, and parent meetings.
• Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and needs.
• Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
• Prepare classroom and students for class activities and community-based experiences.
• Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities in special education, general education, and community-based settings.
• Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.
• Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
• Direct and supervise teacher assistants in supporting and meeting the needs of students with disabilities.
• Effectively collaborate and communicate with general educators in co-taught classrooms.
• Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, and promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
• Participate in appropriate professional activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• N.C. teacher certification, EC General Curriculum License.
• Previous experience as an EC general curriculum teacher preferred.
• B.A./B.S. degree in teaching from an accredited institution or related field.
• North Carolina State certification in teaching in the appropriate subject area.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Must have the ability and proven record of reporting to work on a regular and punctual basis.
• Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Pay

Certified; CHCCS Salary Schedule. Eligible for local supplement and EC supplement.

Schedule

10-month position.
