Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensures that students are properly supervised at all times and takes appropriate safety precautions for children’s well-being.
- Implements the designated curriculum using guides and other materials that address the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of students, aligned with Head Start Performance Standards.
- Implements Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP).
- Creates and maintains a classroom environment that incorporates the principles of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS): Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, Instructional Support.
- Develops lesson plans that support individualized instruction based on ongoing assessment of the progress and accomplishments of each student.
- Establishes productive collaborative relationships with parents/caregivers with the goal of routine, positive communication between the home and school.
- Includes families in the educational process, encourages their participation in the Center's activities, and serves as a resource by implementing regular parent conferences and home visits.
- Complies with federal, state, and local guidelines and with the policies and procedures of the Maryland State Office of Child Care, Head Start, and Catholic Charities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Teacher I (508000): Associates degree in Early Childhood Education; or an Associates degree in a related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education, with an internship or one year of experience teaching preschool age children. Extensive knowledge of childcare principles, procedures, and early childhood teaching strategies.
- Teacher II (531000): Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education; or a Bachelor’s degree in related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education with one year of experience teaching preschool-age children; or, Bachelor’s degree and 1) has been admitted into the Teach For America program, 2) passed a rigorous early childhood content exam, such as the Praxis II, 3) participated in a Teach For America summer training institute that includes teaching preschool children, 4) and is receiving ongoing professional development and resources from Teach For America’s professional staff. Extensive knowledge of childcare principles, procedures, and early childhood teaching strategies.
- Teacher III (532000): Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE); or, Master’s Degree in related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education with one year of experience teaching preschool-age children. Extensive knowledge of childcare principles, procedures, and early childhood teaching strategies.

- Acts with discretion, tact, and professionalism in all situations, maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
- Requires proficiency in using computer systems and software to perform job function, including but not limited to, basic Windows PC, web browsing (i.e., Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.), and Microsoft Outlook. Knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneDrive is preferred.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- No remote or hybrid work availability based on core and essential functions of the position.
- Remaining in a stationary position, which may involve standing or sitting for extended periods, such as required to complete tasks or duties associated with the role.
- Adjusting or moving objects up to 40# in all directions, which may include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repositioning items as necessary to perform the job duties.
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or transitioning between different work sites, which may involve walking, standing, or traveling to various locations as required by the role.
- Hearing and vision abilities, with or without correction, sufficient to effectively observe and communicate with others.
