Early Career Substation Drafter

About the role

Be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients’ objectives and solves their challenges. The successful candidate will collaborate on design issues, seek guidance from more experienced team members, and learn client and WSP standards, practices, and procedures to ensure work conforms to expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, specifications, drawings, and other sources to support drafting and design activities.
  • Prepare physical and civil layout drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams for substation projects.
  • Use 3D CADD software to assist with basic design details and prepare precise drawings.
  • Provide basic technical design assistance ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function using geometric dimensioning, tolerances, and calculations.
  • Verify calculations, design, change orders, and contract plans; escalate issues or technical problems for resolution.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to execute project work.
  • Ensure plans adhere to city, state, and federal regulations.
  • Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review.
  • Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other professionals on project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks and perform additional responsibilities as required.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • Associate’s/technical degree in an accredited drafting program, or sufficient industry experience.
  • 0–1 years of relevant post-education experience in drafting and design support.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Excellent research, evaluation, and analytical skills.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks, follow instructions, and comply with policies.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with Autodesk Vault and Bentley ProjectWise.
  • Proven record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in a closely related discipline.
  • Essential professional licensure/certification.
  • 1+ years of drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, preferably in an engineering environment.
  • Experience with Autodesk Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Inventor and/or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu.
  • Experience interpreting substation electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and physical/civil drawings.
  • Experience working with scaled drawings and survey coordinate systems.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, OneNote, and Excel.
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, self-starter who takes ownership of assigned tasks.
