Early Career Substation Drafter
WSP is seeking an Early Career Substation Drafter for our Meridian, ID office. The successful candidate will work on projects with our Power & Energy Substation Team, contributing to a growing organization that meets client objectives and solves challenges.
About the Role
The successful candidate will learn and implement CAD knowledge, client standards, and WSP’s processes while collaborating on design issues and seeking guidance from experienced team members. WSP brings global expertise in power delivery, power generation, and program management, recently expanded through the acquisition of POWER Engineers, Inc. and TRC Companies.
Responsibilities
- Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support drafting and design activities.
- Draft and design substation projects, including physical and civil layout drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Use 3D computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to prepare precise drawings and basic design details.
- Provide technical design assistance, ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function while adhering to design standards.
- Verify calculations, interpret contract plans and specifications, and escalate technical issues for resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to execute project work and ensure plans comply with city, state, and federal regulations.
- Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review and specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects.
- Work with engineers and technical professionals on project phases, checks, and tasks.
- Complete assigned training tasks and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and company policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- High School Diploma.
- 0-1 years of relevant post-education experience in drafting and design support.
- Associate’s/technical degree in an accredited drafting program or sufficient industry experience.
- Strong command of the English language with effective written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity with drafting and design principles, practices, processes, and methods.
- Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, multitask, and follow instructions.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
- Flexibility to work extended schedules based on project requirements.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in a closely related discipline.
- Essential professional licensure or certification.
- 1+ year of drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, preferably in an engineering environment.
- Experience with Autodesk Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes.
- Experience interpreting substation electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and physical/civil drawings.
- Experience working with scaled drawings.
- Working knowledge of survey coordinate systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and ProjectWise File Management System.
- Reliable, detail-oriented, self-starter who takes ownership of tasks.
