Early Career Substation Drafter
WSP is seeking an Early Career Substation Drafter for our Overland Park, Kansas location. Joplin, MO will also be considered.

Be involved in projects with our Power Delivery and Energy Substation Team and be part of a growing organization that meets our clients’ objectives and solves their challenges. This opportunity offers the chance to learn and implement CAD knowledge, client standards, and WSP’s procedures while collaborating on design issues and seeking guidance from experienced professionals. Responsibilities
- Collect, compile, and analyze data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, and other sources to support drafting and design activities.
- Draft and design substation projects, including physical and civil layout drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Use 3D computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to prepare precise drawings and basic design details.
- Provide technical design assistance, ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function using geometric dimensioning and tolerance calculations.
- Verify calculations, interpret contract plans and specifications, and escalate technical issues for resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to execute project work and ensure plans adhere to city, state, and federal regulations.
- Prepare multiple versions of designs for engineer review and ensure compliance with contract requirements.
- Work with the engineer-in-charge and other technical professionals on assigned project phases and tasks.
- Complete assigned training tasks and exhibit knowledge of current drafting and design support practices.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies while exercising responsible decision-making.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- High School Diploma.
- 0-1 years of relevant post-education experience in drafting and design support.
- Associate's/technical degree in an accredited drafting program or sufficient industry experience.
- Strong command of the English language with effective written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, and methods.
- Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, and multitask under instruction.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Commitment to upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
- Ability to work extended schedules as required by project-specific needs.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
- 1+ year of drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, preferably in an engineering environment.
- Experience with Autodesk Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes.
- Experience interpreting substation electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and/or substation physical/civil drawings.
- Experience working with scaled drawings.
- Working knowledge of survey coordinate systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience with ProjectWise File Management System.
- Reliable, detail-oriented self-starter who takes ownership of assigned tasks.
