About the role

Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, design, concept development, and construction of roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, bridges, water supply systems, and sewage treatment. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with comprehensive land development/site civil design documents including but not limited to demolition plans, site layout, grading plans, utility design, erosion control plans, and storm water management design.
  • Develops conceptual site layouts and preliminary design plans under the supervision of senior engineers to support feasibility assessments, proposals, and client presentations.
  • Affords technical reports that outline methodology, findings, calculations and basis of design as well as due diligence studies to evaluate zoning, environmental constraints, infrastructure availability and code of ordinances set forth by the local governance.
  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Performs routine engineering functions and provides entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements, operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, systems, and infrastructure.
  • Verifies the characteristics of a site and provides basic technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Generates complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebook/logs.
  • Complies with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Completes training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercises responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adheres to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline from an ABET Accredited.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.
  • Familiarity with relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Prior proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, HydroCAD, Pond Pak, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
