Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is seeking a full-time Educational Assistant (EA1) specializing in Autism/Deaf/Blind/Moderate Mental Health support at Frost Lake Elementary in St. Paul, MN. This position aims to be filled within 2 to 4 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing instructional plans and lessons for students.
  • Support the day-to-day operation of the school program by preparing behavior modification charts, point charts, bonus coupons, and homework sheets; monitoring student attendance; and collecting data or other related activities.
  • Record student progress on appropriate documents and maintain official school district student records.
  • Assist the teacher in classroom preparation and housekeeping, including cleaning, arranging or storing materials, furniture, equipment, and files.
  • Work directly with individual students and groups in daily activities and assignments, providing direction and assistance.
  • Monitor and manage student behavior by providing appropriate activities, attention, directions, pacing, cues, feedback, and consequences.
  • Relate to students in a patient, supportive, and warm manner; intervene with students in crisis calmly and empathetically.
  • Participate in school-related activities outside the classroom, such as home visits, family nights, or field trips.
  • Work cooperatively with staff, other professionals, and parents.
  • Participate in staffing and conferences related to students and the program by reporting on collected data, providing feedback, and reporting pupil progress (including evening meetings when needed).
  • Assist the instructional team in providing individualized instruction by tutoring students, offering enrichment activities, supervising study sessions, and organizing computer-based supplemental instruction.
  • Assist in the development and organization of program activities and services by reporting student observations, gathering information, and providing suggestions.
  • Attend team and school staff meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • One of the following:
    • Two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 semester or 90 quarter credits), OR
    • An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, OR
    • A passing score on a state-approved test.
  • Basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness, and understanding.
  • Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • Ability to lift materials or equipment as required for some positions.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team with classroom teachers, support staff, and other paraprofessionals.
  • Some ability to perform basic signing with hearing-impaired children may be required for certain positions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children with disabilities.

Pay

This is a 10-month position with a work schedule of 37.5 hours per week. The pay range for this position is:

  • EA1: $23.24 - $33.32 (Maximum hiring step: step fourteen (14))
  • EA2: $26.34 - $40.61 (Maximum hiring step: step fifteen (15))

  • Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire; official transcripts must be submitted within 30 days of the start date.
  • Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside of the United States.
  • Veterans claiming preference must submit a legible copy of their DD214 with their employment application.
  • Reference checks and a criminal background investigation will be completed as a condition of hire for all new employees and for former employees who have not been employed by the District for more than six months.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
