Job Purpose

Working under the direction of classroom teachers, the EL Coordinator, and school administration, the Educational Assistant provides targeted instructional support that accelerates English language development and academic achievement. This position requires strong English skills in speaking, reading, and writing.

Essential Responsibilities And Competencies

  • Provide instructional support to English Learners in classroom settings.
  • Work with individual students and small groups to reinforce language and academic skills.
  • Deliver teacher-created lessons and interventions designed to support English language development.
  • Aid students in developing English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Maintain accurate records related to student participation and progress.
  • Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials and resources.
  • Support classroom management and student engagement.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Encourage student participation and confidence in using English in academic settings.
  • Support accommodation and instructional strategies for multilingual learners.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, intervention staff, and the EL Coordinator to ensure students receive effective support.
  • Participate in professional development and staff meetings as required.
  • Communicate professionally with staff, students, and families.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Supervise students during designated school activities as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of regional priorities and school success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or EL Coordinator.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred

  • Associate’s degree or higher.
  • Experience supporting English Learners in a school setting.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish).

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong command of spoken and written English.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students.
  • Understanding of language acquisition and culturally responsive practices.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to follow instructional plans and provide effective academic support.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
  • This role is performed in an active K–8 school environment and requires regular standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, and crouching to work alongside students at their level.
  • The employee communicates frequently with students and staff, both verbally and in writing, and uses computers and digital platforms to support instruction and record student progress.
  • The role may require occasional lifting or moving of instructional materials and classroom supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • The employee must be able to actively supervise and respond to students, including in classroom, hallway, playground, and other campus settings.
  • The work environment for this role is an active K–8 school campus, including classrooms, small-group instructional spaces, and common areas.
  • The position requires regular interaction with students, classroom teachers, the EL Coordinator, school administration, and families.
  • The employee may be exposed to typical school conditions, including moderate to occasionally high noise levels and both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • The role requires the energy and patience needed to work with elementary and middle school students throughout the school day.
