E&S Underwriter
MGT is the first AI-driven, neo-insurer focused on evolving commercial P&C insurance for brokers and small business owners. By combining the expertise of industry veterans with state-of-the-art technology, we are ushering in the next evolution of commercial insurance through modern technology, better processes, and a rock-star team.
About the role
This is not a plug-and-play underwriting role. It's an opportunity to join a small, highly empowered team building a modern E&S platform in one of the fastest-growing segments of the market — and to do it on a foundation of AI-native tooling that most carriers are still years from deploying. You'll have real ownership: managing a portfolio, assessing and pricing risk, recognizing exposures, structuring thoughtful coverage solutions, and partnering closely with our broker network to grow profitable, sustainable business. Your decisions matter — and you'll be accountable for outcomes.
We're looking for someone who enjoys problem-solving, thrives in ambiguity, and has a strong bias for action. If you're excited by the idea of building from the ground up and have felt frustrated by the slow pace of change at larger institutions, this role was written for you.
Responsibilities
- Manage and grow an E&S book of business across small commercial lines, with a focus on underwriting quality and sustainable loss performance
- Assess, price, and structure risk across a broad appetite from BOP, GL, commercial property, and adjacent lines with judgment and speed
- Partner with our broker network to build relationships, communicate appetite clearly, and respond to submissions with the urgency that wins business
- Collaborate with the product and technology teams to encode underwriting logic into MGT's AI agent(s) and translating your judgment into scalable rules and decision frameworks
- Identify portfolio trends, flag adverse selection, and contribute to appetite refinement and guideline development
- Serve as a resource for escalated or complex risks, providing coverage guidance and underwriting rationale
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years underwriting E&S commercial insurance, ideally 7+. Candidates with 5+ years brokering E&S commercial lines will be considered where technical risk analysis skills are strong and the candidate has operated in a binding authority capacity
- Technical fluency: Demonstrated ability to work with AI tools, modern underwriting platforms, and tech-forward systems. Early adopter mentality is a must — this role expects active engagement with new technology, not tolerance of it
- Cross-functional range: Proven ability to collaborate across functions — including product and technology — with the credibility to influence without authority
- Builder's mentality: Strong bias for action, comfort with ambiguity, and genuine excitement about building something new. No two days look the same at an AI-native insurer, and the right candidate finds that energizing, not exhausting
