The New York Foundling believes in the power and potential of people, and we deliberately invest in proven practices. From our beginnings in 1869, our New York-based nonprofit has supported hundreds of thousands of neighbors on their paths to stability, strength, and independence. We help children and families navigate foster care, support families facing conflict and poverty, assist individuals with developmental disabilities, and provide access to quality health and mental health services—core to building lifelong resilience and wellbeing. Our interrelated programs offer a whole-person, whole-family, and whole-life approach.

The Developmental Division empowers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live as they choose, actively engaged in the community. Since 1974, we have provided supported residential options, health services, meaningful activities, and employment opportunities for all ages, including elders.

Responsibilities

• Ensure appropriate supervision, health, and safety of individuals; implement Individual Plan of Protective Oversight.
• Advocate for individuals in the community (medical appointments, church, recreation activities, etc.).
• Ensure the individual’s plan of care is implemented and medications are administered as prescribed.
• Assist with daily living skills (personal hygiene, food preparation, housekeeping, laundry, shopping).
• Maintain facility compliance with OPWDD and COA standards.
• Facilitate individual learning and skill training in fire safety.
• Implement and document individual goals; complete daily progress notes and logs.
• Maintain updated certifications in CPR/first aid, SCIP, and AMAP.
• Provide an atmosphere conducive to positive behavior; observe and report regressive or unusual behavior.
• Plan and prepare balanced meals; clean and maintain the residential unit.
• Assist individuals with purchasing groceries, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other needed items.
• Attend workshops, trainings, and meetings; assist in spiritual and ethical development.
• Transport and escort individuals to recreational activities, medical appointments, and home visits.
• Assist in developing social skills; remain on shift until relief arrives.
• Complete job-related tasks as needed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid certifications preferred.
• Valid NY/NJ/CT/PA Driver’s License with 6 points or less.
• Experience working with adults who have developmental disabilities.
• Demonstrated strong commitment to safety.

Pay

Starting at $19.00 per hour, plus education additives: $0.15/hour for an Associate’s Degree, $0.80/hour for a Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
