Join the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Bureau of Driver Licensing as a Driver License Examiner for Commercial Driver License (CDL) candidates. This role offers dependable daytime hours, a consistent workweek, and the chance to stay close to home. You will play an important part in public safety by evaluating new CDL drivers and ensuring they meet Pennsylvania licensing requirements and standards.
Responsibilities
- Safety Evaluation: Assess physical qualifications, driving skills, and vehicle conditions during examinations
- Knowledge Testing: Administer written tests to confirm that applicants understand traffic laws and road signs
- Road Examination: Conduct pre-trip, skills, and driving tests for commercial and non-commercial applicants
- Document Review: Examine identity documents to confirm authenticity and prevent fraud
- Customer Processing: Issue licenses and identification cards while providing accurate program information
- Regulation Compliance: Follow REAL ID, fee waiver, and customer service policies during all licensing activities
Schedule
- Full-time employment, 40 hours/week
- Work hours are 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with a 30-minute lunch
- Overtime and travel to other driver license centers may be required as necessary
- No telework option available
Requirements
- One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public
- Active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver’s License or equivalent and at least twenty-one years of age at the time of application
- No suspensions or revocations of a driver’s license during the five-year period immediately preceding employment
- Possession of an active Class A Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with P and N endorsements (no E, L, N, O, or Z restrictions)
- Must obtain an active unrestricted Class M driver’s license within the first six months of employment or before the end of the probationary period and maintain it during employment (applies to employees hired after February 28, 2022)
- Must meet Pennsylvania residency requirements
- Must be able to perform essential job functions
- Must pass a Fingerprint and Name-Based Criminal History Check prior to employment
