DPW Mechanic Grade 1

40 hours per week, benefited position at $41.81 per hour. CDL and Hoisting licenses required within 6 months of hire. Must own tools and be available for overtime for emergencies, sanding, and plowing operations.

About the Role

The Mechanic - Grade 1 is a highly skilled mechanic responsible for the maintenance and repair of heavy, medium, and light equipment. This role assists the Supervisor of Vehicle Maintenance with the responsibilities of the Equipment Maintenance Division.

Responsibilities

• Plan, schedule, and coordinate mechanical work and programs to maintain, service, and repair municipal vehicles, mechanical equipment, and pumps.
• Provide assistance to employees and participate directly in maintenance, service, and repair work.
• Train and cross-train personnel on operating procedures and equipment.
• Ensure all work complies with accepted maintenance practices, manufacturer specifications, and Town procedures.
• Maintain inventory and records of parts, materials, and operating supplies used in replacement parts lists and schematics for all municipal equipment.
• Review available products, develop purchase specifications, and purchase parts, materials, and operating supplies.
• Advise supervisor of unique and unusual situations.
• Provide extraordinary customer service.
• Perform any other public works function as directed by supervisor or DPW management staff.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, required within 6 months of hire.
• Hoisting License required within 6 months of hire to operate a loader, backhoe, sewer-vac, catch basin cleaner, and street sweeper.
• Must own tools upon hire.
• Demonstrated proficiency in automotive maintenance, hydraulics, and welding techniques.
• Ability to operate test measurement and diagnostic equipment; willingness to develop PC skills within one year.
• Ability to work continuously under varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work overtime as requested or required.
• Good working attitude, ability to work with supervisors and peers without conflict, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to keep records and make reports.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to read and follow service/repair manuals and understand technical specifications established by regulatory agencies.
• Proficiency in the safe and effective use of powered and hand tools.

Qualifications

• Demonstrates the ability to understand and communicate work-related information.
• Basic mathematical skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Physically fit to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting automotive components up to 200 pounds with assistance and climbing into/out of truck bodies.
• Vision correctable to 20/20 with good field and depth perception to operate motor vehicles safely and efficiently.
• Good hand and finger dexterity to use hand tools and make adjustments on equipment.

Pay

$41.81 per hour, subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements.

Schedule
