Document Remediation (Accessibility) Specialist (Administrator III)
About the role
This contractual position supports the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Information Technology Branch (ITB) - Accessibility Section in ensuring that all digital content meets accessibility standards during the redesign and redevelopment of the MSDE Website. The specialist collaborates with content owners, web developers, and project stakeholders to review, remediate, test, and validate digital content for compliance with federal and state accessibility requirements, maintain content integrity, and provide a seamless user experience throughout the migration process.
Responsibilities
- Document Remediation
- Evaluate and remediate digital documents (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF) to ensure compliance with Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
- Review, format, and modify electronic documents to correct accessibility issues related to document structure, headings, tables, images, hyperlinks, forms, reading order, color contrast, and other elements.
- Conduct accessibility testing using automated and manual methods, including assistive technologies, to identify barriers and verify compliance.
- Provide technical assistance and develop remediation plans for complex or high-volume documents, advising content owners on best practices.
- Perform quality assurance reviews to validate accessibility compliance, maintain document integrity, and document remediation activities.
- Time-Based Media
- Review and remediate prerecorded multimedia content by evaluating and updating captions, transcripts, and other accessibility features to ensure compliance with Section 508 and WCAG.
- Develop and maintain accessible alternatives for time-based media, including accurate caption files, descriptive text transcripts, and equivalent content for prerecorded video and audio materials.
Requirements
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Six years of administrative staff or professional work experience. Substitutions include:
- 30 college credit hours for each year (up to four years) of required experience.
- A Bachelor’s degree plus two years of administrative/professional experience.
- A Master’s degree in lieu of required experience.
- U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to administration, policy, or unit operations (year-for-year basis).
Qualified candidates must have two or more years of experience in document remediation, testing, and validation of digital content for accessibility compliance.
Employees assigned duties requiring motor vehicle operation must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license. Applicants must consent to State and FBI (CJIS) background checks.
