Digital Accessibility Specialist III

About the role

An experienced accessibility professional who advances accessible digital communications and supports an effective, university-wide accessibility program. Working in a consultative and educational capacity, this position collaborates with staff, faculty, campus partners, and technical teams to promote accessibility across university websites, web applications, email, social media, documents, images, video, and other digital content.

The coordinator develops scalable guidance, training, tools, documentation, and processes that enable digital content creators across Tulane to understand and apply accessibility requirements and best practices. This position is a key advocate, expert, and first point of contact for the university community on questions about web accessibility.

Responsibilities

• Translate digital accessibility standards, laws, and institutional responsibilities into practical guidance for digital content and services.
• Review websites, web applications, and digital content for conformance with accessibility standards and communicate clear, actionable findings.
• Develop digital accessibility guidelines, procedures, workflows, and policies.
• Create clear, concise, and usable documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Develop and deliver training, presentations, and professional development for audiences with varying levels of technical expertise.
• Evaluate electronic information and digital content using automated accessibility testing tools and manual testing methods, including assistive technologies such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, and speech recognition software.
• Demonstrate strong organizational and project management skills, including synthesizing complex information, managing multiple initiatives, prioritizing work based on impact and risk, and meeting deadlines.
• Utilize excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, listening, and consultative communication skills.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and five years of directly related experience in digital or web accessibility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and working knowledge of Section 508, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other digital accessibility requirements relevant to a complex higher education environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of user experience and universal design principles.
• Experience creating and editing accessible web and digital content.
• Experience leading cross-functional projects or accessibility programs in a decentralized organization.
• Experience in higher education.
• Knowledge of accessible front-end development practices, including semantic HTML, CSS, ARIA, keyboard accessibility, and responsive design.
• Experience with Drupal, WordPress, or comparable web content management systems.
• Experience incorporating feedback from people with disabilities into digital accessibility evaluation, guidance, or program improvement.
