Accessibility Specialist III

About the role

The Electronic Information Resources (EIR) Accessibility Specialist III performs highly complex (senior-level) accessibility work involving the creation, testing, and evaluation of digital content and other forms of EIR. This includes web pages, mobile applications, and software interfaces to ensure compliance with accessibility standards. The role involves planning and leading complex website and web application testing projects, analyzing and remediating electronic documents, preparing reports with recommendations, and delivering technical training for staff. The position also serves as an Accessibility Subject Matter Expert (SME) for EIR purchases, reviews RFP/RFO documentation for compliance, and contributes to team leadership.

Responsibilities

• Analyzes and tests all information communication technology formats (PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, websites, desktop and mobile applications) to meet accessibility standards using automated and manual testing tools, including assistive technologies.
• Recommends and remediates accessibility issues, conducts research into accessibility best practices, and reviews vendor accessibility documentation for compliance before purchase.
• Works with the accessibility manager to develop and improve team processes, reviews accessibility exception requests, mentors junior staff, and leads complex accessibility projects. (35%)
• Provides coaching, guidance, training, and technical support to junior specialists, document authors, content creators, and developers on remediating EIR to meet accessibility compliance standards. (30%)
• Leads formal accessibility training courses and implements industry best practices for digital content and EIR, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and agency policies. (30%)
• Creates reports detailing accessibility obstacles, including WCAG 2.2 compliance deficiencies, defect descriptions, and remediation recommendations with code examples. (20%)
• Delivers testing results to internal customers and participates in follow-up discussions to develop accessibility improvement plans. (20%)
• Leads the development and delivery of instructional materials, courses, and manuals on accessibility topics, including MS Office, PDF accessibility, and testing tools (e.g., IBM Equal Access, Microsoft Accessibility Insights, ARC Toolkit, WAVE). (10%)
• Performs related work as assigned. (5%)

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
• Minimum of three years of full-time experience in EIR, including development, implementation, or interpretation of policies and procedures in a public or private agency.
• One year of full-time experience may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of education.
• Preferred: 5+ years of experience.

Skills

• Expertise in accessibility guidelines, standards, and laws (WCAG, Section 508, ADA, Texas Government Code Section 2054.460, Texas Administrative Code Chapters 206 and 213).
• Expert-level knowledge of MS Office and Adobe Acrobat Professional, with the ability to train others in creating accessible documents and forms.
• Proficiency in HTML and PDF tag structures, attributes, and properties related to accessibility.
• Ability to analyze and solve complex accessibility problems, use accessibility applications, and develop data collection tools.
• Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience conducting accessibility testing using manual and tool-assisted methods, including assistive technologies (screen readers, voice response software).
• Ability to research and present findings on technical topics (accessibility standards, coding, UX/UI design).
• Proficiency in using MS Windows-based workstations without a mouse and configuring accessibility features.
• Ability to oversee and/or supervise the work of others.

Pay

$5,797.66 - $7,652.91 per month.

Schedule

• Full-time, regular position.
