About the role

The DFL research unit Networked and Secure Systems investigates themes such as new network protocols, optimization of network flows, and security aspects of networks, ranging from the physical layer to the application layer. The group has actively contributed to the standardization of new protocols for the web, such as QUIC and HTTP/3. Additionally, the group focuses on identifying and resolving weaknesses in communication protocols or the privacy implications of (mobile) communication.

In a rapidly changing world where communication over global networks underpins key technological and economic innovations, in-depth scientific research is essential. The Digital Future Lab (DFL) is seeking a motivated and passionate doctoral researcher to delve into these themes. The specific topic for your PhD will be determined in consultation with the research unit's leadership.

Beyond processing your research results into scientific publications and presenting them at scientific forums, this role includes a limited teaching assignment within the computer science program. Your contributions will thus impact not only current developments but also the next generation of computer scientists.

Your team

The research center Digital Future Lab (DFL, formerly EDM) has been conducting (primarily) software-focused research in computer science for 30 years. DFL operates under the "Combining Applied and Basic Research" (ABC) principle, aiming for fundamental innovations that quickly find their way to the community and end users. This vision has resulted in structural collaborations with the Flemish strategic research centers iMinds/imec and Flanders Make.

The DFL research center offers researchers a stimulating, pleasant, and accessible work environment where teamwork and well-being play a significant role. Researchers have the opportunity to study the latest technologies and work with state-of-the-art equipment to support their research.

Requirements

  • You hold a master's degree in computer science, engineering sciences: computer science, or industrial engineering-informatics (or equivalent). Final-year students are also encouraged to apply.
  • You have achieved good to excellent academic results.
  • You are passionate about computer science in general and specifically about its application.
  • You possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • You have strong skills and demonstrable experience in software development and can create working prototypes to shape your ideas.
  • You can successfully work independently as well as in a team of researchers.
  • You communicate fluently in English, both in writing and orally.
  • You are enthusiastic about reporting and presenting research results to a broad audience.

Benefits

You will be appointed and compensated as a doctoral scholarship researcher. We offer a two-year doctoral scholarship, which will be extended by another two years, subject to a positive evaluation by the doctoral committee.
