About the role

You will conduct research within the Computer Science department at the Data Science Institute, focusing on the theoretical foundations of database systems for spatio-temporal data. The doctoral research will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Bart Kuijpers. Additionally, you will assist in supervising students in the Dutch-language Bachelor's and Master's programs in Computer Science, the English-language Master's in Statistics & Data Science, or other study programs where the Computer Science department provides educational assignments. You will also participate in the Doctoral School Sciences & Technology.

Your team

The Data Science Institute (DSI) is one of the four spearhead research institutes of Hasselt University, representing excellent research in the field of data science. Through strong connections with local and international stakeholders, DSI contributes to the university's societal mission. Since late 2019, the Data Science Institute has united data science researchers active in subdomains of data science who were previously spread across the university. The expertise and interests of individual researchers shape the institute's character. It is a human-driven institute committed to addressing data-related challenges, fundamental innovations, and applicable solutions.

Requirements

• You hold a master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering: Computer Science, or equivalent. Final-year students are also encouraged to apply.
• You have an interest in theoretical computer science.
• You have distinguished yourself through your academic performance.
• You are highly motivated to obtain a PhD.
• You are willing to assist in the educational supervision of students.
• You can successfully work independently as well as in a team of researchers.

Benefits

You will be appointed and compensated as a Doctoral Researcher. We offer a doctoral scholarship for two years, which can be extended by another two years following a positive interim evaluation by the doctoral committee. The start date of the mandate is in the autumn of 2026 and can be mutually agreed upon.
