Essential Duties

  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions.
  • Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related materials.
  • Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties.
  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck.
  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities by Level

District Sign Tech II: Orders supplies and materials from district shop; orders signs from the regional sign shop; inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs.

District Sign Tech III: May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications; trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures; assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions; conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs); inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • No experience or education required.
  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Competencies

District Sign Tech I: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; Traffic Control Standard Sheets; The Sign Crew Field Book; The Guide to Proper Location and Installation of Signs and Other Devices; inventory/stock control procedures; installing and repairing signs; using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.

Additional Competencies for District Sign Tech III: Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment; maintaining a safe working relationship; leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Required to wear protective gear—respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing—ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing—walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Crouching—bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
  • Kneeling—bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
  • Lifting—raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
  • Visual Acuity—determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.

Conditions of Employment

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. The Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
