Brief Description

Lewis & Clark County, Public Works is hiring a District Operator to work in Lincoln, Montana. Under the direction of Road Manager, this position manages and assists in the daily and routine maintenance operations for Lewis and Clark County’s Public Works Department within designated districts. Preferred that candidates live within 40 miles of Lincoln, however may consider candidates who live outside of the 40 miles. Work schedule is Monday - Thursday, 10 hour shifts. Position is open until filled and applications will be reviewed weekly.

Who We Are

  • The County Public Works Department is responsible for the following divisions or areas of services.
    • Roads, Bridge, and Sign Divisions
    • Vehicle Maintenance Division
    • Solid Waste Division
    • Building Maintenance Division
  • Public Works Administration oversees the administration and financial operations of all programs, services, and projects of the Lewis and Clark County Public Works Department.
    • The Road, Bridge, and Sign Divisions are responsible for maintaining County roads and bridges.
      • During the winter they provide County residents with snow removal services such as plowing and sanding.
        • They oversee the design and reconstruction of existing roads and bridges, perform maintenance projects such as pothole repairs, chip seals, striping, signage, safety modifications, drainage and storm water improvements.
  • The Vehicle Maintenance Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of County vehicles.
    • This includes large equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, snowplows, dump, patch, and water trucks.
      • They also perform light vehicle maintenance on pickups and sedans.
  • The City of Helena Solid Waste Division is responsible for the management of the Lewis and Clark County Landfill, the Marysville Container Site, the closed Scratch Gravel Landfill, and represents the Department of Health on the Lincoln and Augusta Solid Waste Boards.
    • The Building Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the following County-owned buildings.
      • County Attorney
      • Public Defenders
      • District Courts
      • Municipal Court
      • Justice Court
      • Juvenile Probation
      • Community Services

  • Requirements

    • The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are required through a combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and five (5) years road or bridge maintenance and road or bridge construction experience.
      • Completion of an established apprenticeship program may be considered equivalent to the educational requirements and consideration will be given to the years of experience required for apprenticeship graduates.
    • Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license.

    Preferred

    • Preferred that candidates live within 40 miles of Lincoln, however may consider candidates who live outside of the 40 miles.

    Summary Duties

    • Repairs and maintains County roads, bridges and other County infrastructure;
    • Performs minor equipment repairs and maintenance needs;
    • Covers equipment requirements for projects within designated district;
    • Aids in the oversight of daily duties for any assigned division personnel including seasonal employees;
    • Schedules the daily road operations and maintenance schedules within their designated district;
    • Reports schedule and operations to the Road Manager and makes changes when directed;
    • Identifies special projects and field operations that need to be completed within the district;
    • Proposes potential projects and operational needs to the Road Manager;
    • Schedules and plans out special projects within district in coordination with the Road Manager;
    • Oversees operations on special projects to include coordination with contractors and leads the work of assigned staff;
    • Aids in implementing goals, objectives and work standards for the division;
    • Participates in the scheduled-on call rotation;
    • Ensures safety policies and procedures are carried out and that accidents/incidents are promptly reported;
    • Ensures equipment, tools and personal protective equipment are safe and functional at all times;
    • Completes task training for operators or other crew members assigned in the district that includes documentation and approval;
    • Calls in power locates and refresher locates for maintenance projects;
    • Helps identify opportunities for improvement and areas to gain efficiencies;
    • Provides constructive feedback on a regular basis for training and mentoring staff development and also for project activities and field operations;
    • May respond to situation and emergencies as directed and with effective communication efforts;
    • Aids in ensuring accuracy of daily diary and cost coding requirements;
    • Responds to inquiries and questions from the public;
    • May be required to make purchases and complete required documentation for those purchases;
    • Operates County vehicles and adheres to all laws, regulations, and polices;
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

      • The knowledge and use of typical office equipment including phone system, fax/copy machine and basic computer programs to include but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook and KRONOS.
    • Physical Demands:
      • Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
    • Position performs work in all types of weather in conditions where dust, debris and dirt are encountered.
      • This position must be able to stand, twist, stoop, reach, and push, pull or lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
    • Position requires the knowledge and use of typical office equipment including phone system, fax/copy machine and basic computer programs to include but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook and KRONOS.
      • Position requires frequent contact with fellow employees, citizens, and vendors.
