About the role

This position involves directing employees in distribution processes such as receiving, picking, packing, and stowing, evaluating work for effectiveness and economical use of resources, and managing administrative duties including leave approval, training needs, and participation in safety and quality assurance programs.

Responsibilities

  • Directs employees engaged in distribution processes such as receiving, picking, packing, and stowing.
  • Evaluates work for effectiveness and economical use of personnel, materials, and methods to meet production goals.
  • Manages administrative duties, including approving leave, identifying training needs, and ensuring participation in management programs like safety and quality assurance.
  • Establishes deadlines, sets priorities, and coordinates with other supervisors.
  • Operates material handling equipment (MHE) such as forklifts (with a capacity of up to 10,000 pounds), warehouse tractors, and stock selectors.
  • Ensures all safety and security practices are implemented and followed in accordance with OSHA and DLA standards.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Appointment is subject to completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination; unfavorably adjudicated background checks will be grounds for removal.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all requisite state and governmental licenses.
  • Pre-employment physical requirement applies.
  • Completion of Supervisory Certification Program is required.
  • Must meet screen-out elements listed in the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated based on experience and training that demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which they are applying. Emphasis is placed on the quality of experience rather than the length of time. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

Experience may include paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs or other organizations.

Physical Effort

  • Stands on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
  • Bending, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Uses weight handling equipment or receives assistance for items heavier than 40 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Works outside and inside areas that are hot, damp, cold, drafty, and poorly lit.
  • Subject to cuts, scrapes, bruises, muscle strain, noise, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock.
  • Wears protective clothing such as steel-toed shoes, respirators, safety glasses, and earplugs.
  • Mechanized roller conveyors are often present as part of material routing and distribution.
