Distribution Planning Engineer - Remote

About the role
This fully remote position involves interfacing with engineers to prepare computer-based models and perform power system studies on utility distribution systems and industrial/commercial electrical power systems. Studies include long/short-range planning, short circuit, load flow, motor starting, power factor correction, Distributed Energy Resources (DER) impact, load impact, and related analyses.
Responsibilities
- Participate in internal and external client meetings.
- Perform system modeling, including steady-state load flows using software such as CYME, Synergi, Windmil, ETAP, or SKM.
- Conduct system reliability and resiliency planning studies.
- Analyze distribution system circuits for loading, voltage, reactive power, contingency, coordination, and reliability.
- Perform new load and generation interconnection studies.
- Recommend solutions and best practices for standard and non-standard situations.
- Perform detailed engineering analyses following standard methodology, criteria, and principles.
- Actively identify and encourage adoption of new technologies and work practices to reduce costs and improve safety.
Requirements
- BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-certified college or university.
- 2+ years of experience in distribution planning, operations, and electrical engineering system studies (e.g., hosting capacity analysis, contingency analysis, long-term capital investment studies, model validation).
- Experience using power flow analysis software such as CYME, Synergi, Windmil, ETAP, or equivalent.
Skills
- Preferred: Prior experience working with or within electric utilities.
- Preferred: 5+ years of experience in distribution planning, operations, and electrical engineering system studies.
- Preferred: Ability to work successfully in a customer-focused, project-oriented environment.
- Preferred: Experience forecasting load and generation growth.
- Preferred: Familiarity with short circuit software (e.g., ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP).
- Preferred: Familiarity with distribution operation software (e.g., ADMS, DERMS).
- Preferred: Experience with distribution design and/or drafting in AutoCAD.
- Preferred: Use of Python to automate functionality in power system modeling software.
- Preferred: Familiarity with utility protection philosophy and short circuit studies.
- Preferred: Experience with renewable energy generation facility design (e.g., solar, wind, battery storage).
- Preferred: Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, including technical report writing.
- Preferred: Familiarity with Independent System Operators (ISOs) such as PJM, MISO, CAISO, ERCOT, WECC, SERC, NYISO, NEISO, SPP.

Pay
$81,499.00 – $138,549.00 (full-time employment, based on experience, skills, location, and other factors).
