Distribution Engineer

We’re seeking Distribution Engineers & Designers in Michigan who are passionate about electric utility design engineering and dedicated to ensuring every project—simple or complex—is of exceptional quality. You'll work directly with clients to maintain Leidos' reputation for high-quality work and gain expertise in areas such as NESC, Structural Pole Modeling, Electrical Power Calculations, GIS design training, Field Data Collection, and Client Design Standards.

About the Role

This position has remote-working capabilities, but candidates must be located within a commutable distance of our Michigan support areas to provide on-site support to our local utility customer as needed. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to attend in-person meetings and assignments throughout the customer territory in Michigan on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities

• Perform design engineering for Leidos electric utility customers.
• Develop work packages for OH, UG, URD, Make Ready, and Street Light projects using customer GIS and WMS systems such as DDS, GDT, GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, and Maximo.
• Manage the scope, schedule, and budget of assigned work.
• Utilize design tools such as Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc, and DDS.
• Review engineering design packages with clients.
• Perform functional tasks, planning, and/or customer follow-up.
• Conduct scope analysis of assigned work and maintain schedule adherence to advocate client priorities.
• Initiate continuous improvement to workflow processes that drive efficiency and high-quality standards in client design deliverables.
• Coordinate conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements.
• Assess and develop large design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments.
• Develop work permits, easements, and ROW applications.
• Work in both field and office settings, including customer-site visits to collect field data for developing work packages.

Requirements

• 2+ years of prior relevant experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial preferred); additional relevant experience/certifications may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
• Relevant experience working directly with an electric utility or an electric utility consulting company performing design engineering for electric distribution.
• Knowledge and demonstrated proficiency with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
• Prior knowledge of structural analysis, guying calculations, cable pulling calculations, coordination of protective devices, and electric demand and fault currents calculations.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Skills

• Proficiency in providing estimated costs, development of a BOM, and calculating the CIAC.
• Experience with MicroStation for Electrical Distribution design.
• Familiarity with work management software and job estimating software.
• Experience with CAD tools.

Pay

Pay Range: $59,150.00 - $106,925.00. The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
