Distribution Designer
About the role
This role focuses on designing overhead and underground electric distribution systems ranging from 4kV to 69kV. The distribution designer develops safe, cost-effective, and compliant designs, reviews the quality of design deliverables, monitors and maintains project schedules, and reports changes that affect timelines and budgets. The position also identifies risks and opportunities to improve the design and construction of electric distribution projects while collaborating closely with clients and engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and oversee the preparation of detailed design documents for construction, including plans and profiles, structure loadings, design details, trench and conduit drawings, and equipment specifications.
- Create safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs for projects of moderate to high complexity in overhead and underground electric power distribution systems.
- Apply relevant codes, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures to all assigned design work to ensure compliance and consistency.
- Reference and follow client and company policies and procedures when developing moderately difficult to complex site designs for electrical distribution facilities serving a variety of customers.
- Perform distribution system calculations, including equipment sizing, electric load calculations, and pole loading analysis, to validate and optimize design solutions.
- Conduct field work as needed to verify customer requirements, site conditions, and existing system configurations.
- Communicate regularly with clients and engineers to clarify system requirements and identify appropriate Right of Way for proposed equipment and facilities.
- Monitor and maintain project schedules, reporting any changes that may affect timelines and budgets and helping to mitigate schedule and cost risks.
- Identify risks that may impact project schedule or cost and propose opportunities to improve design efficiency and constructability.
- Perform quality reviews of design deliverables to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project standards and client expectations.
Requirements
- At least three years of design experience using AutoCAD, preferably in electrical or utility design.
- Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) tools, including AutoCAD, for preparing detailed distribution design drawings.
- Demonstrated experience in design and drafting for electric power distribution systems, including overhead and underground configurations.
- Ability to perform distribution system calculations such as equipment sizing, electric load calculations, and pole loading analysis.
- Strong understanding of applicable codes, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures related to electric distribution design.
- Capability to interpret and produce construction documents, including plans, profiles, and equipment specifications.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with clients, engineers, and project stakeholders on system requirements and design considerations.
- Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and computer-aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in electrical design or utility design for distribution systems.
- Experience in design and drafting for electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering technology applications.
- Experience conducting field visits to confirm site and system conditions and integrate findings into design work.
- Strong attention to detail and quality in preparing and reviewing design documentation.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to meet project goals and deadlines.
