Dispatcher - Transportation Dept

About the Role

Provide communications support and services to the bus manager, department personnel, and external agencies. Document all radio channel activity for the Transportation Department and assist with emergency coordination.

Responsibilities

• Relay information to 911 agencies to expedite emergency response.
• Provide communications support for the radio network and ensure compliance with FCC regulations and district guidelines.
• Report radio network infractions and mechanical problems to appropriate personnel.
• Assist drivers with problems within the scope of responsibility, maintaining calm and professional communication.
• Provide 911 support during emergencies, including relaying action plans and route adjustments.
• Process route changes and assist with route issues for local schools.
• Track lost students, late or "no-show" buses, and report routine bus problems.
• Perform administrative functions, including sorting, reviewing, and entering radio data, and maintaining dispatch logs.
• Complete assigned projects and work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, and extended hours as needed.
• Demonstrate teamwork, support supervisors, and assist with emergency routing situations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 2 years of experience as a bus driver (required).
• High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (preferred).

Skills

• Ability to speak clearly and effectively using a two-way radio system.
• Knowledge of Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and Transportation Department policies and procedures.
• Familiarity with district locations, roads, and support facilities.
• Ability to work under pressure, analyze situations, and prioritize tasks.
• Knowledge of general office practices and Microsoft Office systems.
• Ability to coordinate with 911 personnel during emergencies.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and opposing perspectives.

Physical Demands

• Frequently required to sit for extended periods, talk, hear, stand, and walk.
• May require use of hands to touch, handle, feel, and/or reach.
• Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Required to operate a motor vehicle as part of job duties.
