About the role

This position counsels and aids disaster survivors, individuals and/or families requiring one or more forms of psychosocial services. The role involves interviewing clients experiencing problems with personal and family adjustments, finances, employment, food, housing, physical and mental impairments, and similar areas. The position secures and evaluates applicable related information and refers clients to community resources and other organizations.

Responsibilities

  • In either a clinical or field setting, interview clients with problems such as personal and family adjustments, finances, employment, food, clothing, housing, and physical and mental impairments to determine the nature and degree of need.
  • Secure information such as medical, psychological, and social factors contributing to the client's situation; evaluate these together with the client's strengths.
  • Counsel clients individually, in families, or in small groups regarding plans for meeting needs, and aid clients in mobilizing inner capacities and environmental resources to improve social functioning.
  • Help clients modify attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing understanding of the nature and source of personal problems, and by identifying and building on personal strengths.
  • Refer clients to community resources and other organizations as indicated; may determine or participate in determining client's eligibility for financial assistance.
  • Compile records and prepare reports; develop and/or review service plans and perform follow-up to determine the quantity and quality of service provided to the client and the status of the client's case.
  • Access and record client and community resource information, manually or using a personal computer, to input and retrieve information.
  • Provide services that are culturally sensitive.
  • Participate actively in community organizations/coalitions serving similar populations and needs.
  • Establish respectful relationships with clients to help them gain skills and confidence, empowering them to solve their own problems.
  • Reinforce the value of the nurturing family and demonstrate a conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.
  • Display appropriate interventions to meet service goals and set appropriate service limits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Use appropriate administrative, fiscal, physical, and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and security of client protected health information (PHI) per HIPAA regulations.
  • Regularly utilize all forms of communication (email, text, phone, etc.) and database practices as directed by the supervisor.
  • As a mandated reporter, follow all procedures outlined in agency policies to report suspicions or confirmation of abuse or neglect of children or adults.
  • Adhere to the tenets of Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic Doctrine.
  • Perform as a team member to ensure productivity outcome measures are achieved.
  • Perform related functions necessary to support the mission and core values of Catholic Charities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma; a bachelor’s degree in a related social service field is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive for work use.
  • Must successfully pass the background check applicable to the position.

  • Judgment: Ability to make prudent and timely decisions; exhibit sound and accurate judgment; explain reasoning for decisions.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent; draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, fingers, and feet accurately and handle precise movements.
  • Problem-Solving Ability: Ability to identify and/or prevent problems before they occur; formulate alternative solutions to problems when necessary; transfer learning from past experiences to new experiences of similar nature.
  • Quality Management: Ability to complete duties on time and with precision at least 95% of the time; edit the accuracy and thoroughness of one’s work and the work of others; constructively apply feedback to improve performance; generate ideas to improve and promote quality in work.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Abilities

  • Regularly sit, stand, climb, walk, hear/listen, and talk.
  • Frequently lift up to 10 pounds, pull/push, carry, grasp, and reach.
  • Occasionally crawl, stoop, and kneel.
  • Clearly see 20+ feet, with or without corrective lenses, and ability to focus.

Workplace Environmental Conditions

  • Noise Conditions: Exposed during a shift to constant or intermittent sounds at moderate to loud levels dependent upon daily activities.
  • Exposure to Trauma: Provide direct services to vulnerable community members, including those with behavioral health challenges and those exposed to trauma.
