About the role
Provide administrative and adjudicative support to professional staff responsible for determining eligibility for Social Security disability benefits. The role involves accessing and managing confidential information—including personal demographics, Social Security numbers, earnings records, work histories, prior disability filings, and medical information—through Social Security electronic systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform initial evaluations of disability claims and identify deficiencies requiring resolution.
- Request and review medical records; contact disability applicants to complete forms and answer questions.
- Enter, update, and transfer sensitive information within Social Security electronic systems.
- Monitor consultative examination providers to ensure timely appointments and medical reports.
- Coordinate medical evidence, examinations, and transportation as needed.
- Verify medical records for completeness before authorizing payments according to policies and procedures.
- Maintain vendor files and perform technical reviews of completed disability cases for compliance.
- Interview and communicate with claimants, representatives, medical professionals, attorneys, judges, and vendors.
- Train other staff members as needed.
- Perform general office operations and other assigned duties.
Requirements
- High school education preferred.
- One year of technical clerical office work, public contact work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Good attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Effective oral and written communication skills; strong documentation and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Excel, Adobe, Word, and ability to learn new computer systems.
- Good accuracy, typing, grammar, and customer service skills.
- Flexibility to adapt to job demands and willingness to take on additional responsibilities.
Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of spelling, punctuation, grammar, and correct English usage.
- Basic business mathematics and understanding of recordkeeping systems.
- Familiarity with office methods and procedures.
- Understanding of applicable policies and procedures related to disability programs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Good judgment and decision-making skills; ability to interpret routine matters according to established policies.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Training
This is an entry-level position. The selected candidate will receive training in:
- Various aspects of the Social Security Disability Program and applicable policies.
- Relevant computer applications and communication with claimants, representatives, and field office personnel.
- Identifying medical sources and understanding common medical terminology.
- Assisting with the development and adjudication of disability claims.
