This system leadership position is responsible for developing and executing strategic, market analysis, and business planning activity for Duke Health.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Associate Vice President, Strategic Planning and Business Development to lead and facilitate strategic planning processes.
- Develop and lead processes and timelines for refreshing the strategic plan to enhance Duke Health’s competitive position and ensure timely responses to market and industry changes.
- Staff planning processes, including assisting in leadership retreats, working with leadership on priority setting, and tracking/preparing schedules and projects.
- Organize and direct planning efforts across Duke Health, integrating clinical service line activities with business development and network development efforts.
- Develop strategic and/or business plans to support organizational, operational, and clinical service goals.
- Lead a team in developing written plans that include goals, objectives, relevant financial/clinical/market data, measures of success, and methods for evaluating performance.
- Maintain close working relationships at all organizational levels to ensure the quality of planning deliverables and synchronize clinical services development plans with operational and financial planning.
- Work closely with the Certificate of Need (CON) function to incorporate regulatory issues into strategic and business plans.
- Stay current on CON and other regulatory issues affecting the organization and report implications to leadership.
- Oversee structured analysis and business planning for new program development and business opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Sr. Director, Strategic Intelligence, in developing and implementing the annual Environmental Assessment for Duke Health and its entities, leading the communication of strategic risks or opportunities from findings.
- Interpret and present data to various organizational levels, ensuring metrics are understandable, timely, and actionable for decision-making.
- Organize and educate the Strategic Planning staff to report data comprehensively, incorporating quantitative and qualitative information such as market share, forecasting, competitive intelligence, and field reports.
- Direct the production and collection of relevant financial, clinical, and market data for the planning process, collaborating with Service Lines, Marketing, Hospital and Corporate Finance, Performance Services, and other departments.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial and operational performance by coordinating efforts across entity boundaries.
- Demonstrate leadership in developing Planning staff to meet Duke Health’s needs, setting goals aligned with the Strategic Plan and supporting staff development through training and educational opportunities.
- Lead a team of professionals (managers, analysts, and administrative staff) in executing the department’s responsibilities.
Requirements
- Extensive knowledge of healthcare planning databases.
- Proficiency in Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to achieve results in a large, complex organization.
- Highly developed verbal, written, and analytical skills.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to facilitate meetings and foster trust.
- Ability to present complex information to all organizational levels.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and processes simultaneously.
- Self-motivation and ability to perform with minimal supervision.
- Ability to travel within the market area as needed.
Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, or a related field.
Experience:
- Director: Five years of progressive responsibility in hospital administration, provider strategic planning, business and operations planning, with proven success in strategic process facilitation, business plan development, and strategic analyses. Supervisory and/or leadership experience preferred.
- Senior Director: Seven years of progressive responsibility in hospital administration, provider strategic planning, business and operations planning, with proven success in strategic process facilitation, business plan development, and strategic analyses. Prior supervisory experience required.
Level Characteristics
- Director: Supervises and manages project teams to develop Duke Health strategic plans across entities and geographies, including multiple service lines or stakeholders. Works independently, takes initiative, follows through on work plans, and reports deviations. Supervises staff with limited input and direction.
- Senior Director: Supervises and manages project teams, including internal and external stakeholders, to guide and develop organizational strategic plans. Oversees strategic plans with enterprise-wide importance. Works independently, advises leadership on work status and risks, and provides guidance to other professionals. Recognized as an authority in specific subjects, mentors and coaches staff, and supervises independently.
