DIRECTOR, RN INPATIENT - UNIVERSITY PSYCHIATRIC CENTER- UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO HOSPITAL

Department: UPC Inpatient Adult Services – Full Time (1.00 FTE), Days shift

About the role

Direct and coordinate the clinical and management activities of one or more units to provide quality patient care. Actively support programs and services aligned with long-range strategic objectives. Collaborate with the Unit Medical Director to support education and research. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, and direct activities of supervisory, technical, professional, and support staff; conduct staff meetings.
• Interview applicants, hire, train, supervise, evaluate, counsel, discipline, and terminate departmental personnel.
• Establish specific standards and objectives for the clinical unit; ensure implementation of and compliance with standards, objectives, and operating policies and procedures.
• Plan safe, economical, and efficient nursing and/or patient care.
• Ensure patient care is delivered in accordance with quality standards; ensure documentation of patient care activities.
• Monitor formulation and utilization of clinical records to assist in resolving patient problems; provide continuity of care and discharge planning; ensure clinician orders are transcribed and carried out.
• Provide and coordinate clinical learning experiences for staff and students.
• Plan and assist in patient teaching; provide and coordinate orientation and clinical learning experiences for staff and students.
• Act as liaison between patient, family, physician, clinician, and staff.
• Ensure maintenance of equipment, supply levels, required records, and reports.
• Maintain departmental reports and records; collect statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes.
• Attend technical and administrative meetings; participate in committee functions and hospital-wide activities within the scope of this position or as directed.
• Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings, and workshops.
• Support education and research in conjunction with the Unit Medical Director.
• Develop and administer the division's annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures.
• Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes.
• Identify and report or correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
• Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner.
• Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations they don’t understand or may “not seem right.”
• Develop and maintain an effective organizational culture including alignment with Behaviors of Excellence.
• Attend and actively contribute to leadership meetings with ACMO/EMD, unit-level team meetings, and 1:1 meetings with dyad.
• Cascade system-level communications to frontline team members on a weekly basis.
• Support unit director priorities for throughput, quality, safety, and patient experience.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN required if not MSN); Master’s Degree preferred.
• 2 years of directly related experience.
• Current RN license in New Mexico or as allowed by reciprocal agreement.
• CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuers within 30 days of hire.

Working Conditions

• Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or sitting most of the time with pushing/pulling of arm or leg controls.
• Subject to an annual contract and performance appraisal.
• Tuberculosis testing completed upon hire and as required thereafter.
• Exposure to chemicals and biohazardous materials requiring PPE.
