Director, Quality & Patient Safety (Clinician)

We are part of the operations leadership team, accelerating measurable and continual progress in meeting the organization's quality objectives. We collaborate with Medical Directors, the Chief Medical Executive (CME), operational executives, and quality and patient safety executives to develop the strategic plan, set direction, and evaluate clinical quality management programs. This role manages all activities and resources related to planning, budgeting, organizing, staffing, directing, monitoring, controlling, and coordinating the department’s work efforts. We provide direction and ensure the effective implementation of the Quality Improvement Program for acute services, proactively developing quality activities aligned with Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital (SAFH) strategies and values. Building strong teams and business relationships—both internally and externally—is key, as is serving as a subject-matter expert on the quality program to influence improvement strategies. We work with the organization to pursue operational improvements and efficiencies, supporting clinical assessment, process improvement, and redesign while eliminating waste and redundancy to achieve optimal quality outcomes.

Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital is a 64-bed acute care hospital in Auburn, California, at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. An integral part of the Auburn community, the hospital provides care using the latest technologies while maintaining a small-town, friendly atmosphere. As the hub of a network of Sutter Health services in Auburn and surrounding foothill communities, the hospital leverages the resources and advanced technologies of the not-for-profit Sutter Health system to ensure quality patient care. The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement the strategic plan for clinical quality management programs in collaboration with Medical Directors, the Chief Medical Executive (CME), operational executives, and quality and patient safety executives.
• Manage departmental activities and resources, including planning, budgeting, organizing, staffing, directing, monitoring, controlling, and coordinating work efforts.
• Provide direction and ensure the effective implementation of the Quality Improvement Program for acute services.
• Proactively develop quality activities aligned with Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital (SAFH) strategies and values.
• Build and maintain strong teams and business relationships, both internally and externally.
• Serve as a subject-matter expert on the quality program to develop and influence improvement strategies.
• Pursue operational improvements and efficiencies, supporting clinical assessment, process improvement, and redesign.
• Identify and eliminate waste and redundancy to achieve and retain optimal quality outcomes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Management, Public Health, Nursing, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Current licensure as one of the following in California: Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Doctor (MD), Pharmacist (PharmD), Physician Assistant (PA), or Nurse Practitioner (NP).
• 12 years of recent, relevant experience.

Skills and Knowledge

• Expert verbal and written communication skills, especially in high-stakes situations.
• Ability to collaborate with physicians, hospital executives, health plan personnel, governmental personnel, and colleagues across the foundation and Sutter Health.
• Strong prioritization, decision-making, and expectation-setting skills.
• Computer literacy, particularly with spreadsheet and word-processing software.
• Detailed knowledge of clinical, business, operational, financial, and regulatory/compliance aspects of commercial and governmental capitated healthcare programs.
• Familiarity with medical foundation and medical group organization and structure.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing peer review confidentiality.
• Working knowledge of Total Quality Management (TQM) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) in clinical settings.
• Understanding of healthcare law, regulations, accreditation requirements, and clinical standards of practice.
• Experience with business planning, including analysis, statistics, budgeting, feasibility studies, and implementation.
• Ability to function independently with minimal management oversight.
• Understanding of risk management principles and processes.

Pay

Pay range is $165,339.20 to $264,555.20 per year. The compensation range may vary based on geographic location and considers factors such as experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is one component of Sutter Health’s comprehensive total rewards program.

Schedule

• Full-time, exempt position.
• 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
• Weekend requirements as needed.
