About the role
The Director of Print Operations provides Christ-centered leadership for Production Services at Brigham Young University, fostering a culture of belonging, accountability, collaboration, stewardship, and continuous improvement consistent with the mission of BYU and the principles of Becoming BYU. The Director leads a complex, multi-location print operation, overseeing production, quality, workflow, color management, and operational performance to ensure reliable, high-quality service. As a member of the Production Services executive leadership team, the Director drives strategic planning, operational excellence, technology advancement, and employee development through data-informed decision-making and Lean principles.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for execution and operational performance of all enterprise print production functions across Production Services.
- Oversees prepress, color management, print production, and finishing operations to ensure quality, consistency, throughput, and alignment with established production standards and service expectations.
- Responsible for business development strategy, including customer, pricing, and marketing strategies.
- Responsible for maintaining safe, compliant, and operationally disciplined production environments across all print operations. Ensures adherence to regulatory, university, and departmental safety and compliance standards.
- Responsible for managing and directing department budget and expenditures.
- Responsible for long-term operational planning, equipment strategy, and organizational development for all print production operations. Ensures production capabilities, technologies, and workflows support current and future institutional needs.
- Responsible for enterprise print quality systems, operational consistency, and continuous improvement initiatives across all production environments. Ensures standardized processes, measurable performance, and disciplined execution throughout all stages of print production.
- Responsible for leadership, development, and operational alignment of all print production personnel, including full-time staff and student employees. Builds a high-performance culture focused on accountability, technical capability, continuous improvement, and alignment with BYU values and mission.
- Responsible for visibility, coordination, and operational transparency across all print production workflows. Ensures accurate job tracking, workflow accountability, and effective communication throughout the production lifecycle.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Print Technology, Graphic Communications, Operations Management, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 8–10 years of progressive experience in print production or manufacturing operations, including digital print and finishing environments, prepress and color management workflows, high-volume or multi-site production operations.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience, with direct responsibility for production teams, operational performance, workflow execution in a complex environment.
- Maintains throughput and capacity management, quality control systems, equipment utilization.
Preferred
- Master’s degree (MBA or related field).
- 10+ years of experience in print production, manufacturing, or industrial operations, with increasing leadership responsibility.
- Advanced expertise in prepress workflows and color management, including color profiling, calibration, and industry-standard methodologies (e.g., G7 or equivalent).
- Experience implementing Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies, with measurable impact on productivity, quality, or cost reduction.
- Experience overseeing multi-location or distributed production environments.
- Proven ability to establish and manage operational performance metrics (KPIs) and drive a data-driven production environment.
- Experience with production MIS systems, workflow automation, and print management technologies.
- Leading technical teams and developing specialized capabilities (e.g., color specialists, prepress teams).
