About the role
This position is responsible for shaping and executing interpretive and storytelling solutions for visitor and audience experiences across multiple platforms. Projects are grounded in the core content, mission, and interpretive methods of the institution, with particular attention to strategies that make content physically, virtually, and intellectually accessible to a wide range of public audiences.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with the Chief Digital Officer, and in collaboration with curatorial, exhibitions, education, marketing, and development teams, to develop cohesive interpretive and storytelling strategies across onsite, digital, and broadcast platforms.
- Acts as an audience advocate and master storyteller, ensuring that video and multimedia content is engaging, accessible, and aligned with institutional goals.
- Provides creative leadership for translating complex content into compelling media experiences for diverse audiences.
- Directs the conceptualization, production, and presentation of video content, including storytelling features, exhibition media, marketing and educational videos, and documentation.
- Directs and oversees the video capture and presentation of live events, including lectures, panels, performances, and public programs, for in-person display, digital distribution, archival use, and potential broadcast television.
- Oversees both event-based productions and long-form or short-form narrative storytelling videos across all digital platforms.
- Leads and manages the creation and production of video projects, including defining scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
- Directs the creation of video content optimized for social media platforms, applying platform-specific storytelling techniques, aspect ratios, pacing, captioning, and accessibility standards.
- Collaborates with digital, marketing, and communications teams to ensure video content supports audience growth, engagement strategies, and platform performance goals.
- Works cross-departmentally to design, plan, and implement media-based projects, including exhibitions, web and mobile platforms, live events, and immersive or interactive museum installations.
- Hires, manages, and collaborates with outside contractors, vendors, and freelance production teams as appropriate.
- Researches, plans, and develops project scopes and budgets, including competitive pricing analysis, cost estimation, and final budget ownership for video productions and live event coverage.
- Coordinates media production schedules, arranges shoots, and prepares facilities, sets, and AV equipment for both studio and on-location production.
- Records video and audio while proactively engaging and directing subjects, speakers, performers, and crew to achieve high-quality productions.
- Directs multi-camera productions and live event recordings, ensuring strong visual composition, sound quality, and storytelling continuity.
- Edits production materials into finished videos and multimedia assets optimized for digital platforms, in-museum display, and broadcast standards when applicable.
- Oversees the adaptation and repurposing of event-based and long-form storytelling video into short-form, social-first video assets for distribution across institutional social media channels.
- Oversees the creation and management of media assets, organizing, managing, and preserving them for long-term digital preservation strategies.
- Ensures consistent standards, workflows, and documentation for media production and storage.
- Operates, maintains, and updates the museum’s video production and editing lab systems, software, and workflows.
- Evaluates and recommends new tools, technologies, and production approaches to improve quality, efficiency, and reach across platforms.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5-7 years’ direct experience in multimedia production, with an emphasis on education and/or non-profit media production highly desirable.
- Strong technical expertise in:
- Studio and on-location video production, including multi-camera setups
- Live event recording and audio capture
- Video editing and post-production workflows
- Experience creating and optimizing video for digital and social platforms (e.g., Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn), including short-form storytelling, vertical video, captioning, and platform-specific best practices.
- Understanding of social media distribution strategies, analytics, and audience engagement as they relate to video performance.
- Proven ability to plan and execute productions, including coordinating shoots, managing equipment, and supporting live event production.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and/or equivalent professional experience, with demonstrated ability to translate complex content into engaging media.
- Experience producing media for exhibitions, in-gallery installations, or immersive environments.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive media practices (e.g., captioning, audio description, accessible design).
- Experience with digital asset management systems and archival media workflows.
- Knowledge of broadcast standards and distribution.
- Experience working cross-functionally in complex organizations (e.g., museums, cultural institutions, or nonprofits).
