About the role

This position is responsible for the marketing and licensing of UH's portfolio of intellectual property (IP) and overseeing the license portfolio and licensee compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies potential licensees and secures license agreements through marketing and outreach efforts.
  • Develops and executes marketing plans for UH patents through external stakeholder, market research, and engagement of faculty inventors.
  • Works with OTTI staff to capture value in UH IP, manage IP, and commercialize technologies.
  • Directs compliance to ensure efficient workflow and interactions with the UH research and technology enterprise.
  • Engages with industry partners, startups, and investors to build relationships and develop commercialization strategies for a portfolio of technologies.
  • Negotiates, drafts, and executes options and licenses with optimal deal structure, providing support to the lead negotiator and guiding faculty and staff through negotiations.
  • Structures licensing terms based on valuation, risk factors, and includes pragmatic milestones to encourage commercialization.
  • Reviews agreements, collects signatures, and closes out licensing deals.
  • Directs the day-to-day operations of the licensing and compliance group within OTTI to ensure an efficient workflow and responsiveness to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supervises and mentors licensing staff, evaluates performance, and provides formal and informal guidance.
  • Balances the needs of a complex set of stakeholders including faculty, students, administration, industry partners, entrepreneurs, and investors.

Requirements

Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Preferred: Minimum of ten (10) years with at least 2-4 years specializing in technology licensing and marketing.

Qualifications

Thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical, or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4-year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.
