Director of Special Events Sales
About the role
The Director of Special Events Sales is responsible for leading the special events business across ATG San Antonio venues including The Espee, Majestic Theatre, and Empire Theatre, with ownership of delivering the annual private events revenue goal of $1.6M. This role sets the sales strategy, leads the department, and drives growth through proactive prospecting, creative event concepts, strategic partnerships, and strong relationships with corporate, nonprofit, cultural, social, hospitality, and agency partners.
Responsibilities
- Lead the special events department and establish clear goals, processes, accountability, and communication rhythms to support revenue growth and operational excellence.
- Develop and maintain relationships with corporate clients, destination management companies, convention and hospitality partners, nonprofit organizations, cultural partners, hotels, event planners, caterers, promoters, and community stakeholders to grow repeat and referral business.
- Create and execute strategies to fill dark nights, maximize use of available venue spaces, and develop creative event concepts that differentiate the venues in the San Antonio market.
- Partner closely with venue teams Production/Technical, Customer Experience, Marketing, Operations, Food & Beverage, Finance, and Programming to ensure private events are financially sound, operationally feasible, and delivered at a high standard.
- Oversee event pricing, proposals, contracts, invoicing, deposits, insurance requirements, client communications, and post-event evaluation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and strong client satisfaction.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is a commercially minded leader with knowledge of the large-scale event booking market and convention business, established relationships with DMCs, catering and event companies, and event planners, and the ability to build relationships, identify new revenue opportunities, inspire a service-driven team, and maximize venue utilization.
Skills
- Established experience in private events, sales, hospitality experience, with demonstrated success prospecting, negotiating, contracting, and growing revenue.
- Proven ability to own and deliver annual revenue goals, manage a sales pipeline, forecast performance, and translate market opportunities into booked business.
- Experience leading a team, managing client relationships, developing proposals and contracts, and working cross-functionally to execute events in a fast-paced environment.
- Established relationships with DMCs, catering and event companies, convention partners, and event planners strongly preferred.
