About the role

The City of Culver City, CA is seeking an experienced and innovative communications and public affairs leader to serve as its first-ever Director of Public Affairs. This role is ideal for a self-directed and entrepreneurial leader who can collaborate to develop, implement, and continuously evolve communication strategies that advance organizational priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for citywide communications, public affairs, media relations, branding, and community engagement efforts.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on public messaging and organizational alignment.
  • Collaborate across departments to build relationships throughout the organization and drive initiatives forward.
  • Help shape how Culver City engages, informs, and connects with its community.
  • Build a modern communications function from the ground up.

Requirements

  • Experience in public affairs, communications, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute effective communication strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in public affairs, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in public affairs, communications, or a related field.
  • Experience leading public affairs and communications teams.
  • Knowledge of public relations, media relations, and crisis management.

Skills

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with social media and digital communications.
  • Understanding of community engagement and stakeholder management.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range up to $205,691 - $249,995 DOE/DOQ.
