About the role
The Director of Nursing is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining nursing service objectives, standards of practice, and care delivery systems while providing administrative authority and leadership to all nursing staff. This role oversees the RAI process, MDS coordination, care planning, and the delivery of resident care, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as the Nurse Practice Act. The Director of Nursing collaborates with all facility departments and external providers to coordinate admissions, discharges, referrals, and interdisciplinary care planning.
- Manage staffing and scheduling, promoting efficiency within budget guidelines.
- Maintain adequate supplies and equipment in partnership with the Administrator and Maintenance Director.
- Foster a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
- Support resident rights and confidentiality.
- Strengthen medication safety and quality improvement efforts.
- Ensure staff receive ongoing education and training aligned with current policies, regulations, and best practices.
Requirements
- Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in Minnesota.
- Training in rehabilitation, gerontology, nursing administration, management, supervision, or psychiatric/geriatric nursing—either before or within 12 months of appointment as Director of Nursing Services.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
- Must be able to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must pass a criminal background check as required by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
Qualifications
- Preferred experience in healthcare, especially in skilled nursing or assisted living.
- Demonstrated adaptability, resilience, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills to build trust and handle diverse demands.
