Location: Hartford, CT with a hybrid work schedule. Full-time, 40 hours per week, first-shift. Schedule: Monday through Friday, with flexibility for weekly operational needs.

About the Role

The Director of Nursing 2 oversees the medical consultative work in collaboration with the Director of Pediatrics and provides clinical oversight for the agency in the Health Management and Oversight (HMO) Division. This role involves:

  • Establishing health regulations, policies, practice, and nursing standards of practice.
  • Providing supervisory oversight of DCF’s Health Advocates, who assist with issues related to health insurance.
  • Overseeing the establishment and monitoring of congregate care nursing and medication administration guidelines in DCF-licensed facilities.
  • Providing nursing consultation, as needed, to DCF staff related to complex medical cases.
  • Overseeing multidisciplinary and Child Abuse Providers' contracts.

Responsibilities

  • Directs staff and operations of the nursing department.
  • Coordinates, plans, and manages nursing activities, including staff assignments.
  • Formulates program goals and objectives.
  • Develops or assists in the development of related policy incorporating current nursing research and professionally recognized standards.
  • Interprets and administers pertinent laws.
  • Evaluates staff and prepares or assists in the preparation of the nursing budget.
  • Maintains contacts with individuals within and outside the department who might impact program activities.
  • Develops or assists in the development and implementation of plans for nursing care.
  • Participates in recruitment and retention programs.
  • Makes rounds to determine the quality of nursing care.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance Programs and ensures optimal quality of provided care in a safe environment.
  • Develops and/or implements effective ongoing programs to measure, assess, and improve the quality of nursing care, treatment, and services delivered to patients.
  • Develops productive work teams and protects the human and civil rights of patients and/or clients and staff.
  • Recommends disciplinary actions and collaborates with clinical instructors for educational programs.
  • Represents the hospital and/or facility in meetings of professional and/or community organizations.
  • Compiles data and prepares periodic reports.
  • Coordinates and provides twenty-four-hour nursing coverage for the facility or assigned unit(s).
  • Intervenes in crisis situations and investigates all unusual incidents.
  • Leads and participates in meetings; may speak on behalf of nursing.
  • May oversee other disciplines including pharmacy, respiratory therapy, or social work.
  • May participate in strategic planning and research activities.
  • May be a member of standing committees.
  • Leads the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview, and selection.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity in a healthcare or hospital nursing setting as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current nursing license from the State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health, or a Multistate/Compact Registered Nurse license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing team operations.
  • Documented clinical consultation and supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of nursing standards and standards of care.
  • Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Clinical experience in child and adolescent healthcare.
  • Experience with health preventative strategies.
  • Experience with contract oversight.

Skills

  • Considerable knowledge of nursing principles and practices in an appropriate specialty.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and practices, including strategic planning.
  • Understanding of relevant state and federal laws, statutes, regulations, and accreditation guidelines.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health nursing, nursing administration, and research procedures as applied to nursing.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to problem-solve, multi-task, and coordinate high-level activities.
