About the role

The Connecticut Department of Correction is seeking an Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join the team at the New Haven Correctional Center. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position on first shift, Monday through Friday between 7:00am and 3:00pm.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, evaluate, and develop treatment plans for inmates' health care needs
  • Provide comprehensive advanced nursing treatments and health care services
  • Order, analyze, and interpret diagnostic study results
  • Prescribe medication and monitor patient responses
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of medical and psychiatric care
  • Consult with clinical staff on assessment methods and treatment plans
  • Assist in determining the need for contractual health services
  • Participate in quality assurance and clinical committees
  • Train nursing and paraprofessional staff
  • Complete home assessments for safety
  • Testify in court
  • Direct agency clinic services

Requirements

  • A current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse issued by the Connecticut Department of Public Health
  • Experience with incarcerated/forensic populations preferred
  • Eligibility for participation in federal health care programs
  • Controlled Substance Registration for Practitioners and DEA Registration
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license (may be required)

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an approved school of nursing
  • Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
  • Completion of an approved advanced practice registered nurse program
  • At least two years of experience in advanced nursing practice

Skills

  • Knowledge of advanced nursing principles and treatments
  • Relevant state and federal laws, statutes, and regulations
  • Psychiatric nursing principles and practices
  • Substance abuse issues as they relate to overall health and psychiatric status
  • Pharmacology as it relates to advanced nursing practice
