Director of Mt. Graham International Observatory (Safford, AZ)

Duties & Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership and Operational Oversight
• Maintain continuous communication with supervisory staff
• Foster regular communication with all staff
• Establish operational goals, policies, and performance standards
• Workforce Leadership and Human Capital Management
• Direct a multidisciplinary workforce
• Oversee all aspects of human capital management
• Facilities Operations, Vendor Management, and Contract Oversight
• Plan, prioritize, and ensure logistical, maintenance, and custodial services
• Lead procurement, negotiation, and management of external vendor relations
• Oversee contract performance
• Program Planning, Budget Management, and Compliance
• Develop, implement, and oversee the MGIO Program Plan
• Provide oversight and management of the MGIO budget
• Ensure compliance with University policies and applicable regulations
• Government, Community, and Professional Engagement
• Serve as the primary liaison with local, county, state, and federal agencies
• Perform additional duties as assigned

• Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures
• Knowledge of facilities maintenance and operations
• Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and supervisory skills
• Ability to mentor and manage staff
• Ability to work effectively with a wide range of people
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work nights and weekends
• Proficiency using Windows and Microsoft Office

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work long, irregular shifts
• Ability to take occasional after-hours call-outs
• Ability to lift and transport up to 50 lbs
• Ability to work for extended periods of time at remote sites
• Ability to work in extreme mountain weather conditions
