Director of Lab Operations
About the Role
We are seeking an accomplished Technical Director of Lab Operations in Volusia County, Florida to lead the day-to-day technical, scientific, and operational performance of a large, high-volume, clinical laboratory. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an experienced laboratory professional who thrives at the intersection of clinical excellence, people leadership, operational strategy, and business performance. Reporting to the Senior Director of Lab Operations, you will shape laboratory strategy, develop high-performing teams, improve processes, and ensure exceptional quality and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for clinical laboratory operations, establishing objectives, priorities, and performance goals.
- Use operational and performance data to identify opportunities, drive decisions, improve productivity, and enhance laboratory services.
- Manage operations within established budgets while identifying cost-saving and process-improvement opportunities.
- Standardize policies, procedures, and best practices across laboratory sites.
- Ensure effective communication and collaboration across departments, locations, and shifts.
- Maintain strong quality control and quality assurance programs and ensure accurate, timely, and proficient testing and reporting.
- Ensure laboratory operations comply with applicable federal, state, local, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor laboratory performance and provide leadership with operational, quality, and project updates.
- Evaluate opportunities for growth and contribute to long-range planning for laboratory services.
- Build, coach, mentor, and develop a high-performing leadership and laboratory team.
- Oversee staffing plans, scheduling, workflow, performance management, hiring, promotions, and employee development.
- Create an engaging, collaborative work environment focused on accountability, service, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Develop educational initiatives that keep laboratory teams current on policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external partners and ensure timely resolution of service concerns.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related science required.
- Advanced degree such as an MBA, MPH, or MHA highly preferred.
- Medical Technologist certification through an approved registry required.
- Minimum of 7 years of laboratory management experience within an operation of similar size and complexity; 10+ years strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success leading teams, improving laboratory operations, managing quality and compliance, and driving measurable performance improvements.
- Strong communication, analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
