Director of Forensic Evaluation Service (Supervising Physician)

About the role

The Forensic Evaluation Service (FES) Director leads, supports, and coordinates the activities of the Forensic Evaluation Service, Legal Affairs Department at the Oregon State Hospital (OSH) serving individuals from the courts, including those found Guilty Except for Insanity (GEI), deemed incompetent to aid in their defense, or civilly committed.

Responsibilities

• Provides clinical supervision and administrative management of FES staff including psychiatrists, psychologists, and support staff and oversees the quality of forensic evaluations (competency, criminal responsibility, and risk).
• Conducts complex assessments and reviews peer evaluations.
• Affirms compliance with federal and state laws, administrative rules, the Joint Commission and CMS standards, OSH policies, and professional standards of practice.

Requirements

• Board certification in general psychiatry and board eligibility or board certification in forensic psychiatry at the time of appointment.
• Physician's license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners at the time of appointment and maintain the licensure throughout employment.
• Minimum 2 years' experience managing clinical and administrative staff.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of psychiatric care, including forensic and complex clinical cases, with the ability to provide high-level consultation and direct treatment when needed.
• Experience guiding, mentoring, and supporting psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners to ensure quality standards and implement recovery-oriented, evidence-based care while fostering a collaborative, patient-centered environment.
• Experience balancing clinical and administrative responsibilities, program planning, policy implementation, and compliance with regulatory standards.
• Experience thriving in a dynamic hospital setting, embracing clinical challenges, and utilizing collaborative problem-solving techniques to address barriers to patient care and staff development.
• Experience leading risk management initiatives and structured pathways for forensic patients, including transition planning and community reintegration.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $29,003 - $31,825 per year.
