About the role

The Director of Facilities oversees the operation, maintenance, and safety of The Apollo’s facilities, ensuring all building systems, infrastructure, and operational environments meet the highest standards to support performances, programming, staff operations, and visitor experiences. This role leads maintenance and security staff, manages vendors, budgets, capital improvements, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory requirements in a dynamic performing arts environment across the Apollo Theater campus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement maintenance policies, procedures, and preventive maintenance programs to ensure reliable operation of building systems.
  • Oversee routine maintenance tasks and coordinate repairs to maintain operational readiness.
  • Manage the day-to-day operation and upkeep of facility systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural components.
  • Ensure facilities meet safety, accessibility, and regulatory requirements while supporting performance and event operations.
  • Develop and manage the facilities budget, monitor expenditures, track maintenance costs, and identify cost-effective strategies.
  • Identify, contract, and manage service vendors and contractors to ensure high-quality service delivery and compliance with organizational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety, building, and health regulations; conduct regular safety inspections and coordinate staff training.
  • Coordinate insurance requirements, limits, coverages, and compliance.
  • Schedule, supervise, and support Security and Maintenance staff, fostering a collaborative, solutions-oriented work environment.
  • Develop and maintain emergency preparedness and response protocols (EAP); coordinate response efforts during facility-related incidents or emergencies.
  • Partner with organizational leadership to support long-term facility planning and train staff and visitors on EAP as required.
  • Evaluate opportunities for operational improvements, sustainability initiatives, and integration of new technologies or systems.
  • Coordinate, file, and manage Permits of Assembly and Temporary Permits of Assembly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of facilities or maintenance management experience.
  • Experience managing building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety infrastructure in both historic and new-build facilities.
  • Experience supervising facilities or maintenance staff.
  • Strong vendor and contractor management experience.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, building safety, and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and management of building-related licenses, including Boiler certs, Elevator/Lift certs, FSD, and Energy Use certs.
  • Experience managing budgets and capital improvement projects.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Experience working in high-activity, high-traffic performing arts, cultural institutions, or public venues.

Pay

$140,000 – $175,000
