Director of Engineering & Security
Job Description
The Director of Engineering & Security (DOE) oversees the maintenance and security of the hotel's building, equipment, and grounds. This role requires managing day-to-day operations, implementing preventative maintenance, communicating with vendors, and ensuring guest and associate satisfaction.
Manage day-to-day operations of engineering and security areas and staff.
Implement and supervise preventative maintenance of mechanical/electrical areas, public areas, and guest rooms.
Confer with vendors for product and service information.
Process purchase requests for engineering department needs.
Manage contractors and ensure work is properly performed.
Inspect and evaluate facility conditions and recommend improvements.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of building exterior, parking garage, and storage spaces.
Communicate maintenance needs and work orders to department leaders.
Ensure pool is serviced and chemicals are properly adjusted.
Perform maintenance and repairs on malfunctioning systems and equipment.
Coordinate and perform preventive maintenance work.
Order and maintain inventory of supplies and operating equipment.
Review guest satisfaction survey results with employees.
Ensure adherence to Sonesta safety and sanitation standards.
Respond to guest complaints and ensure proper follow-up.
Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming.
Strategy and Planning
Ensure compliance with service contracts and statutory regulations.
Prepare weekly work schedules and adjust as needed.
Analyze guest satisfaction data to develop and implement plans.
Aid in the development of the Capital budget.
Financial Management
Participate in the management of the department's operating budget.
Achieve budgeted revenues, control labor costs, and expenses.
Advise in budget and forecasting processes supporting hotel objectives.
Managing Your Team
Interview, hire, train, and promote Engineering & Security staff.
Provide consistent feedback and recommend disciplinary action when necessary.
Ensure employees receive proper training applicable to their positions and career aspirations.
Conduct pre-shift meetings and review pertinent information.
Monitor, measure, and recognize employee performance.
Assist in annual performance evaluations.
Coach team by providing specific feedback to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.
Ensure employees are treated fairly and equitably.
Handle employee issues professionally and promptly.

Physical Demands
- Lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently or constantly.
- Carry, lift, pull items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Push and pull items weighing up to 200 lbs.
- Stand frequently.
- Bend, climb, kneel, and move around the hotel.
- Work both inside and outside.
- Work in rain and warm temperatures.
- Work in guest contact and non-guest contact areas.
- Work in environments with moderate noise levels.
- Work with various tools, including those that may be dangerous.
- Use protective equipment and clothing as required.
- Follow OSHA and national and local electrical codes.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent required; 2-year degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in engineering and maintenance or related field.
- Technical training in HVAC-R/electrical/plumbing and supervisory experience.
- Previous experience in a hotel property or service industry preferable.
- Knowledgeable of local, state, and federal regulations and safety standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

- Strong organizational and attention to detail skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
- Extensive knowledge of hotel and hospitality industry.
