Job Summary
Bridge Brothers is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead and continue building their engineering organization. The role involves leading, developing, and growing the engineering department, recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and retaining high-performing engineers and designers. The Director will also establish performance expectations, coach team members, and own engineering department performance.
Responsibilities
- Lead, develop, and grow the engineering department.
- Recruit, hire, mentor, and retain high-performing engineers and designers.
- Build a culture centered around accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
- Develop career paths, succession planning, and professional development programs.
- Own engineering department performance, capacity planning, workload balancing, and resource allocation.
- Develop scalable engineering processes, workflows, standards, and documentation.
- Implement and improve QA/QC procedures, design review processes, and engineering best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives that improve quality, efficiency, and project execution.
- Evaluate and implement new engineering tools, software, automation, and technology.
- Provide executive oversight of structural engineering activities across custom steel bridge projects.
- Guide engineers through complex technical challenges and major design decisions.
- Review critical engineering calculations, designs, and technical deliverables.
- Ensure engineering solutions are practical, constructable, and aligned with fabrication and field operations.
- Maintain technical involvement by providing guidance, reviewing critical engineering decisions, and supporting the team on complex challenges while empowering engineers to own day-to-day project execution.
- Partner closely with detailing, fabrication, construction, project management, procurement, and executive leadership.
- Improve communication and collaboration across departments.
- Support estimating and business development with technical guidance during project pursuits.
- Remove operational bottlenecks that impact engineering performance or project delivery.
- Establish the long-term vision for the engineering organization.
- Develop KPIs and performance metrics that drive accountability and operational excellence.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability through engineering innovation, standardization, and process improvements.
- Help position the engineering department for future growth as the company continues to scale.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of engineering experience within bridges, structural steel, heavy civil, industrial, manufacturing, transportation, energy, marine, or other engineered steel environments.
- Previous experience leading engineering teams, departments, or engineering operations.
- Demonstrated success developing engineers, improving processes, and building high-performing teams.
- Strong understanding of structural engineering, steel design, fabrication, and construction practices.
- Experience managing engineering resources across multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, and decision-making skills.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
