Director of Employee Relations
About the role
St. Paul’s School seeks an experienced human resources leader to serve as its inaugural Director of Employee Relations, a newly reimagined role focused on strengthening employee engagement, leadership development, and organizational effectiveness. Reporting to the Chief Business Officer, the Director will serve as a trusted advisor to supervisors, employees, and senior leaders while helping foster a workplace culture built on trust, accountability, collaboration, and respect.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary advisor to managers and employees on employee relations matters, workplace concerns, policy interpretation, employee conduct, and performance expectations.
- Conduct or oversee workplace investigations and facilitate conflict resolution and mediation when appropriate.
- Partner with supervisors and department leaders on performance management, corrective action, documentation, and employee development.
- Advise leadership on federal, state, and local employment requirements while proactively identifying and mitigating employment-related risks.
- Design and deliver training on supervisory skills, performance management, employee relations, workplace conduct, and compliance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, Labor Relations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Seven to 10 years of progressively responsible human resources experience, including significant employee relations responsibilities.
- Experience conducting workplace investigations, managing complex employee relations matters, and advising managers and senior leaders.
- Strong knowledge of employment law and HR best practices, paired with excellent judgment, communication, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills.
- Experience in an educational, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization is preferred; professional HR certification such as SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or PHR is also preferred.
