Position Summary
Blue Current is seeking an exceptional leader to establish and drive our Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) program as we scale. As Director of EH&S, you will have the unique opportunity to build a best-in-class safety culture from the ground up—designing comprehensive policies, programs, and systems that protect our employees and enable our business growth. This is a strategic leadership role where your vision and execution will directly impact organizational success. You'll partner with cross-functional teams across R&D, manufacturing, engineering, and operations to embed safety into every aspect of how we work. You'll report directly to senior leadership, have direct oversight of EH&S professionals, and influence business decisions at the executive level.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and continuously improve comprehensive EH&S policies, procedures, and management systems that establish a foundation for operational excellence and regulatory compliance
Partner with facility management, R&D, manufacturing, and engineering teams to conduct rigorous job hazard analyses and equipment/process risk assessments; translate findings into actionable improvements
Lead the incident investigation program, driving root cause analysis and implementing preventive measures that reduce organizational risk
Oversee contractor and construction activity monitoring to ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements
Establish and lead emergency preparedness and response protocols, including coordinating emergency response training and serving as a key member of the Emergency Response Team
Develop and oversee a dynamic EH&S training program featuring online and in-person modules, ensuring employees have the knowledge and skills to work safely; leverage modern training technologies (SCORM, RISE 360, Articulate, etc.)
Build and champion a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, awareness campaigns, and visible leadership commitment to health and environmental stewardship
Build KPIs for measuring the effectiveness of the safety programs and organizational culture and report results to management
Collaborate with equipment engineering teams on design reviews and risk assessments to ensure new equipment meets compliance and safety standards
Manage compliance obligations across federal, state, and local regulations; serve as primary liaison with regulatory agencies
Maintain critical compliance documentation including Hazard Communication Programs, CERS, OSHA 300 logs, and other required filings
Develop and implement standard operating procedures, hazard communication protocols, and safety policies that evolve with organizational growth
Supervise and mentor direct reports, developing their expertise and building a high-performing EH&S team
Establish departmental objectives, work plans, and budgets; allocate resources strategically to support organizational growth and safety initiatives
Identify and champion process improvement opportunities; drive systematic implementation of safety enhancements across the organization
Build strong cross-functional relationships and collaborate effectively with all departments to integrate EH&S principles into business operations
Respond to emergency situations after hours and weekends as needed; maintain operational readiness at all times
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental health and safety) AND 5+ years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety within battery, semiconductor, chemical manufacturing or similar industry
OR Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental health and safety) AND 7+ years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety within battery, semiconductor, chemical manufacturing or similar industry
Deep knowledge of federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.)
Expertise in EH&S management system implementation, risk assessment, and process improvement
Strong proficiency in regulatory compliance, including environmental audits and compliance assessments
Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performing teams
Excellent communication skills—able to translate complex safety concepts for diverse audiences and present effectively to senior leadership
Strategic mindset with ability to balance compliance requirements with business objectives
Proven track record of building positive safety cultures and driving employee engagement
Experience in fast-paced, growth-oriented environments
Excellent written and verbal communication skills — clear, professional, and appropriately concise
Must be based in or able to reliably commute to Hayward, California — this role is fully onsite
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
