Director of Athletics
Founded in 1986, St. Charles Community College (SCC) has a reputation as one of the best two-year colleges in the state of Missouri. SCC's service area includes a six-county region with a population exceeding 540,000. The college's main campus in Cottleville has won architectural awards for its innovative, contemporary design. The Dardenne Creek Campus features the Center for Healthy Living and the Field to Table Institute. Opening Fall 2025, the Innovation West Campus in Wentzville will house the Regional Workforce Innovation Center. The college participates in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XVI athletics.
Responsibilities
- Administrative & Financial Leadership
- Creates and implements an annual fundraising program for the Athletic Department to achieve the annual budget target.
- Develops, maintains, and balances the annual budget for all sports in conjunction with the head coaches.
- Prepares the unit plan for the Athletic Department.
- Assists with College-wide initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Departmental Operations & Staff Supervision
- Manages the day-to-day operations and issues of the department.
- Ensures proper training and education of head coaches, including safety, regulations, Title IX, and college policies.
- Manages and trains the Sports Information Specialist, student workers, and support staff in the Athletics Department.
- Writes and annually updates the coach's manual and student-athlete handbook.
- Coordinates scheduling of games, officials, athletic trainers, facilities, and transportation.
- Oversees college athletic fields and spaces, including managing the field maintenance budget and field specialist.
- Works with the Grounds Department to ensure playability and safety of outdoor practice and playing fields.
- Ensures strong communication between Athletics and Grounds departments.
- Coordinates with Athletic Trainer(s) to ensure the safety of student-athletes.
- Compliance, Eligibility & Regulatory Reporting
- Responsible for all audits of St. Charles Community College conducted by NJCAA.
- Completes NJCAA online eligibility for all intercollegiate athletic teams.
- Manages the NJCAA MVP online site.
- Serves as compliance officer, preparing and completing NJCAA, NCAA, and NAIA forms.
- Prepares and completes the Equity in Athletics Report and Higher Education Reporting Act to satisfy Department of Education and Title IX requirements.
- Maintains professional memberships to stay current with trends and regulations in intercollegiate athletics and facilities.
- Student Support & Program Engagement
- Creates and implements an environment of excellence that recognizes student-athlete accomplishments in all aspects of their educational experiences.
- Works closely with the International Support Services Department to ensure proper recruitment and documentation for international student-athletes.
- Serves as liaison with Campus Lake Apartments and International Support Services to organize fall orientation for student residents and address arising issues.
- Community Relations & Strategic Partnerships
- Represents the College at Midwest Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) and Region XVI NJCAA meetings.
- Acts as one of the three points of contact between St. Charles Community College and NJCAA, alongside the President and Provost/CAO.
- Serves as spokesperson to the academic community and local media on behalf of athletics.
- Establishes strong intercollegiate athletic support in the community.
- Enhances internal communication with numerous college departments.
- Develops external relationships with area high schools, media, businesses, and sponsors.
- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provides leadership for the department, including management of budgets and staff.
- Performs supervisory functions: trains, instructs, assigns work, recommends personnel actions (transfers, promotions, wage increases, terminations), arranges additional help or overtime, explains and enforces college policies, safety rules, and regulations, and evaluates performance.
- Works with other Directors to supervise shared positions.
Requirements
- Education and/or Experience
- Minimal Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of experience in athletic department administration at the director/operations supervisor or assistant director level, or five years of experience at the full-time head coach level in a community college/junior college setting. Demonstrated knowledge of NJCAA rules and regulations.
- Preferred Qualifications: Over two years of experience in athletic department administration at the director/operations supervisor/assistant director level, or over five years of experience at the full-time head coach level in a community college/junior college setting. Demonstrated success in achieving annual fundraising goals.
