Director of Advising and Student Success
About the Role
Robeson Community College is seeking a strategic, student-centered Director of Advising and Student Success to provide leadership for academic advising, student retention, tutoring, and student-success initiatives. Reporting to the Vice President of Student Services, this position will lead efforts to strengthen advising practices, coordinate proactive student interventions, monitor student progress, and implement strategies that improve persistence, retention, completion, and overall student success.
The Director will supervise Academic Advisors, the Retention Specialist, and part-time Tutors while collaborating across Student Services, Academic Affairs, and other College departments to ensure students receive coordinated support from enrollment through completion.
Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee academic advising, retention, student-success, and tutoring services.
- Supervise, train, evaluate, and develop advising and student-support staff.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive, proactive academic advising model.
- Establish advisor caseloads, communication standards, and student outreach strategies.
- Coordinate early-alert and intervention efforts for students experiencing academic or other barriers.
- Lead retention and persistence initiatives for academically at-risk and non-enrolled students.
- Develop student-success plans, interventions, referrals, and follow-up strategies.
- Use enrollment, retention, persistence, academic, and completion data to identify trends and improve outcomes.
- Establish measurable goals and performance indicators for advising and student-success services.
- Collaborate with Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Counseling, Career Services, Accessibility Services, faculty, and other College departments.
- Ensure students receive accurate information regarding academic programs, degree requirements, registration, graduation, transfer opportunities, and College resources.
- Promote effective use of student information systems, early-alert technology, and communication platforms.
- Coordinate professional development and training for advising and student-success staff.
- Prepare departmental reports, manage resources as assigned, and participate in College committees and initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with FERPA and College policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in higher education, student affairs, counseling, education, educational leadership, or a related field.
- Three years of progressively responsible experience in academic advising, student success, retention, student affairs, higher education, or a related area.
- Demonstrated experience working directly with college students.
- Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, or program-management experience.
- Experience using student data, technology, or student information systems to support student success.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of relevant experience.
- Supervisory experience.
- Community college experience.
- Experience with advisor caseload models, early-alert or retention programs, and student-success initiatives.
- Experience with Ellucian Colleague/Datatel or comparable systems.
- Knowledge of North Carolina Community College System programs and practices.
