About the Role

The Director of Accounting oversees the Property Accounting teams in accounting for operating property financial results, including real estate acquisitions and dispositions. This role ensures compliance with accounting rules, maintains accounting policies and procedures, and drives process transformation and change management initiatives across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Property Accounting team responsible for accounting activities related to Camden’s operating property financial results for both multifamily and retail lines of business, including utility bill pay and rebilling activities.
  • Own the monthly internal reporting process regarding operating property revenue and expense variances.
  • Manage and mentor four managers and staff while creating and promoting a supportive work environment.
  • Maintain and apply accounting policies in accordance with US GAAP, ensuring compliance with internal controls.
  • Identify topics, research accounting standards, and prepare technical memos to support new or changes to existing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Lead the accounting processes for acquisitions and dispositions of real estate, acting as liaison with Real Estate Investments, Finance, and Legal in the preparation of related closing statements.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Shared Services, Strategic Services, Treasury, Finance, and IT to improve processes, resolve issues, and increase efficiency.
  • Lead change management efforts by communicating objectives, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring successful adoption of new workflows and technologies.
  • Support Financial Reporting in the preparation of data disclosed in Form 10-Q and 10-K SEC filings, as needed.
  • Contribute to the budgeting process for operating property financial results.
  • Organize and manage responses to internal and external audits, including quarterly and annual SOX and financial audits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • 5-10 years of professional accounting experience, with at least 3+ years in a leadership position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Technology savvy, including extensive experience with ERP systems (Oracle and/or SAP), high proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and knowledge of business intelligence tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team in a fast-paced, high-transaction-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Strong analytical and multitasking skills.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.

Work Environment

  • Intermittently sedentary but requires mobility (e.g., climbing stairs).
  • Repetitive motion of hand-wrist in using a computer and writing.
  • Typical office setting.
  • Emotional stability and personal maturity are important attributes.
  • Must handle stressful, urgent, novel, and diverse work situations on a daily basis.
  • May require long hours and odd schedules, including weekends.
  • Periodic travel by automobile and occasional airline travel, including out-of-town and/or overnight trips.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential for success in this position.
  • Hazards can be minimized with proper lifting techniques, safety training, and wearing appropriate PPE.
