About the role
The Director of Accounting will play a critical leadership role in building and scaling the company’s internal accounting infrastructure. This individual will oversee the transition of accounting and bookkeeping functions from outsourced vendors to a fully in-house operation, including the development of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and related financial departments. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in construction or commercial mechanical/HVAC accounting, along with strong leadership capabilities to hire, mentor, and develop accounting staff while implementing scalable processes, controls, and systems that support continued company growth.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the transition of outsourced accounting and bookkeeping functions to an internal accounting department
- Build and oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and General Ledger functions
- Develop accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to support operational scalability and compliance
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis
- Partner with executive leadership to provide strategic financial insights and operational recommendations
- Hire, train, mentor, and manage accounting and administrative personnel
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax and financial reporting requirements
- Cook up with external auditors, banking partners, insurance providers, and other financial stakeholders
- Evaluate and implement accounting systems, ERP platforms, and process improvements to increase efficiency and reporting accuracy
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience
- Strong background in construction accounting or commercial HVAC/mechanical contracting accounting is required
- Experience managing WIP schedules, job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project-based financial reporting
- Proven experience building or scaling accounting departments and internal processes
- Strong understanding of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, General Ledger, and financial controls
- Experience overseeing financial audits, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software and ERP systems
- Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills
- CPA designation is highly preferred but not required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; MBA is a plus
