About the role
The Director, Loan & Pool Accounting oversees the accounting and financial reporting of loan transaction activity in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of four Accountants and one Accounting Manager, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Create, maintain, and enhance key process documentation to support internal controls, audit requirements, regulatory compliance, and operational consistency.
- Oversee monthly variance analyses and effectively communicate key drivers, trends, and business impacts to management and stakeholders.
- Partner with Treasury to determine appropriate GAAP accounting treatment on both a consolidated and legal entity basis for loan repurchases, loan substitutions within pools, and loan portfolio acquisitions, ensuring accurate transaction recording and reporting.
- Direct the preparation and review of journal entries, monthly bank reconciliations, external reporting requirements, and entity-level financial reporting.
- Oversee accounting and reconciliation activities related to third-party net settlement processes.
- Support external financial statement audits, SOC 1 examinations, and compliance audits by providing documentation, analysis, and audit support.
- Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Review work performed by and collaborate closely with offshore accounting resources to ensure quality, consistency, and timely completion of deliverables.
- Serve as the Accounting representative on cross-functional growth initiatives, strategic projects, and system modernization efforts.
- Partner closely with Treasury, Accounts Receivable, and other business functions to ensure accurate accounting, compliance with servicing obligations, and effective management of loan-related transactions.
- Monitor and strengthen internal controls to ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and accounting standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or commensurate work experience, required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation (active or inactive) required.
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience with increasing levels of responsibility required.
- 3 years of people management experience required.
- 2 years public accounting experience required.
- Experience within a Fortune 500 organization preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit processes.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization and build strong cross-functional partnerships.
- Experience working with large data sets and data analysis tools preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to analyze and manipulate large volumes of data, preferred.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Able to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Experience leading process improvement, automation, or system enhancement initiatives preferred.
Qualifications
- Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or commensurate work experience.
- Required Experience: 7 years of progressive accounting experience with increasing levels of responsibility, 3 years of people management experience, 2 years public accounting experience.
